generic 30-06 test

my dads friend has a generic 30-06, not sure of brand as of now, but i know its not a big brand like rem, browning, win ect...anyway i belive it is built on a mauser type action...i am interested in buying it and he will make it available to me at a decent price...the question is what is a good factory round to run through it to see if it shoots good...im not looking for sub minute groups, just something that will reachout to 200 yards and hit a pie plate. i'm not much of a rifle buff so i dont know what a good avarage load is for the '06...maybe a 165 rem coreloct. any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob Gifford

The most popular seems to be the 150 gr or the 180 gr if your just looking for something to test a 30-06 . Usually the 165 gr are only found in your premium ammo and you don't need that just to try one out .

Bob,
I'm curious as to what brand the rifle it is because places like JC Whitney and Western Auto and others had good rifles like Winchesters and Marlins that would put both their names (like wholesaler and retailer) on them. A friend of mine has a Sears made by Winchester and it's a Model 70 30-06 Spr. that isn't freefloated. BIG DEAL. It shoots real good.

Oops that's JC Higgins not Whitney

150 or 180 powerpoints,coreloct,federal should group 2.5" at 100.
