Rost- the club I belong to allows any US service rifle for service rifle and CMP matches, though it may not quite fit the proper NRA rules, a few people do occasionally try them. I shot 3 or 4 matches with a 03A3 when I started out, the rifle was more than accurate enough to keep every shot in the 10 ring, and I never had a problem getting every shot off, but the bolt is so darn long that I had to tilt the rifle away from my cheek slightly to cycle it without getting popped in the face. When I finally got a Garand, my scored improved by 30+ points, For the money and a few extra $$s I could have gotten an AR, but I'm more of a collector than a serious competitot

By looking at the Tubbs rifle, it is designed that you wouldn't have to break your cheekweld to cycle the bolt, as the bolt passes inside of a tube that maeks up the stock, I can see how this little improvement would make a huge difference over the bolt guns I'm used to shooting. Tubbs rifle no doubt has a much shorter bolt travel also, he doesn't have the cavernous magazine of an '03, a magazine cutoff system, and no doubt shoots a shorter cartridge than the old 30-06- probably a 6.5/284. The pistol grip on his rifle also makes for an easier and more consistant trigger pull than a straight stocked 50 year old rifle as well. Its a very nice design

Have shot a few bolt guns in practice matches in my life. The 03 is not comparable. The bolt guns I shot are set up so you don't have to move your head at all. The caliber David uses is 6mm X or XC.. You are off a bit on the 6.5x284. Don't take this as a flame but this thread is how rumors start. Folks talking about things they don't know about. I know David personally. PS its a Tubb rifle, not tubbs(that would be tubb's)

The point about the semi auto that New guy brings up about service rifles and bolt guns having no distinction was at Camp Perry. I know there is no difference at club matches. I win almost every local club match I enter with a SERVICE RIFLE. But it makes it very hard to do. I consistently have to shoot around 788-794 or so to do it.

And New Guy keeps saying the tubb is a modified AR. It is not. It has a totally different lock system. There are not top and bottom halves, the mag well is different etc..... There are many mods that have been here longer than the AR buttstock mods. Except most casual shooters are not aware of them. Some of the stock mods used originated overseas.

Hope that makes a bit more sense.

Yes ,the barrett m82a1 it's a semi-auto 50bmg sniper rifle. But as a rule of thumb the bolt is more accurate .
