RE: wich 45-70 to buy?????
any model thats a marlin is the best..... I dont have one in 45-70 but have marlins in 44 mag 357 mag and 30-30 all three have a 20 inch barrel, 20 inches just feels right when it come to a lever action.

I like the Stainless Guide gun with leupold 2.5 IER scout scope and ghost ring sights. There is simply no better close range, under 200 yards, big game rifle.

I also have a Marlin 1895G (non-ported barrel) in .45/70 and it’s a great gun. The .45/70 is at its best when handloaded, but even for guys like me who don’t load our own, there are plenty of good factory loads available. My personal favorite load is the 350gr. JFP (2,025 FPS/3,187 FPE) by PMC. It’s quite powerful and accurate in my 1895G and not prohibitively expensive. I use a Leupold Rifleman 2-7x33 scope on Leupold QR rings/mounts, which compliments this rifle nicely and has held up perfectly despite the recoil. My Marlin 1895G is one of my favorites. Get one, you won’t be disappointed. :)

Marlin 1895 rifle is what I have. I don't like the looks of the guide guns, but I've never picked one up. You really can't go wrong with either. If you're considering a used gun, I would not get one with a ported barrel.

Another good gun is a Ruger 1S in 45/70..I had one and it shot great and looked great just sitting there.

RE: wich 45-70 to buy?????
I like my Marlin guide gun in 45-70 and I won't part with it. For a bit more nostalgia I was thinking about getting another one in the cowboy edition. This has a longer barrel and octagon shape. Pretty cool.

RE: wich 45-70 to buy?????
while we're here let me throw in a plug for the T/C Encore in 45-70... I have 2 barrels for it, the 18½" Kahtadin and a 24" sporter barrel... they both have their place, the 24" for open areas, woods etc, and the Kahtadin in the thickest nastiest places you can find... the only thing with the short barrel is it's ported and an ear blaster... both shoot exceptionally well 1½" max at 100 yards... plus the versatility of all the other calibers that are available... just one more option to look at...
