Remington 7400 in .308 Problem
 

I heard through the grape vine that the Remington 7400 has problems with jamming. True or False?

Does anyone know of a resource that discusses the issue?

My cousin has one that is jamming while feeding the second round.

Does "Jammomatic" sound familiar ? You'll hear a lot of guys refer to them as that and yes they jam on occasion but it usually involves improper maintenance. Usually the chamber or a dirty chamber is the culprit.

Also check the clip for any burrs that might be causing the shell to sick or not feed properly.

I have had a few of them. One in a 308 and still have one in a 270Win. I have been lucky with no jams. Got to clean out all oil. Oil can be your enemy and collects dust and crud. Also the gas port needs to be cleaned out. I hear people doing this with pipe cleaners.

Some ammo is not happy in them. As with any semi firearm. I used Corelokts and winchester power points with no problems for over a decade. I reload for it now and found out powder choice is critical. IMR4064 was recommended but would not cycle correctly unless it was max. IMR 4350 works great, and cycles well.

Tell him to try different ammo. And when cleaning. Oil very lightly then remove all the oil you can in the action and gas ports with a rag.

I might end up with this rifle. If I do I will be back to ask some questions. Like how to clean a gas port etc...

One more question though. Can this rifle be taken apart so that it can be thoroughly cleaned? Kind of like an AR15.

No, this is the hard part of this rifle. You can take the trigger assembly out. But can't take the barrel off or hammer out.

These rifles are just fine as long as you follow the manual. Don't know about present rifles, but back in the late 50's and at least through the mid 70's, Remington shipped a bronze bristle chamber brush with each rifle. Normal cleaning, followed by a good chamber brushing, took care of any problems. We did not leave but just a tad of oil in the chamber for rust preventative.

I hunted for years with a 742 in 6mm, my father-in-law hunted with a carbine (18" bbl) 740 in 280 Rem. We shot these a lot at the range, too, developing handloads that delivered 3-shot 1.5 inch groups at 100 yds. LOTS of shooting. I have NEVER had a jam. Never.
PS - Old IMR 4320 was the best powder for both of these rifles.

I have a 742 carbine ni .30-06 that has never jammed on me.

Stat, what you do need to be aware of more than jamming, (which misinformation I think has gotten out of hand), is POI changes. You can take the foreend screw and tighten down real tight an be zero'd at 100 yards. Then Loosen it and POI can change up to 6 to 8". I noticed this isn't the case for all 7400 and 742. But some put unneeded pressure on the barrels. It also has alot to do with the forearm dimenisions.

What I do is before hunting season, is put loktight blue on the forearm screw and tighten pretty tight. I sight the 270win 7400 gun in. My shoots 1.5MOA with 55gr of 4350 and 210 primer and 130gr gameking. And don't take apart or clean until after hunting season.

Thanks for all the info. The problem is that this rifle is jamming 100% of the time. This is also second hand info. I am going to get it for cheap and then clean it up, maybe get a new mag and see how she works for me. I have always wanted a semi-auto hunting rifle.

I am sure I will have another post as soon as I get it. I will supply pics and hopefully you guys can guide me through the cleaning. BTW - This rifle was abused, in that it was probably used for years as a hunting rifle and never cleaned.
