RE: which 300?
If I was to buy another elk rifle,I would go with the .300 Ultra mag, since I already have one and have sold my 2 300 WSM.I would like to try the BAR Shotrac in the 300 WSM.
Any of the 300's work good, the real advatage of the 300 ULTRA is it's power and most ppl cannot shoot far enough efectivly to buy one,I'n talking 4-600 yds.
So with that said I would opt for the 300 WSM in a nice lite rifle with 180gr Nosler Part,2-7x30mm scope.Sighted in @ 2.5 inches high at 100 yds and be happy with the set up.

if i was going to buy a 300 it would be the WSM. Very accurate and it is short action so it can be chambered into shorter lighter rifles.
i don't knwo why you would want a 300 when the trusty old 30-06 can get the job dune just as well.

If you are hunting North America I don't know why the 300 WSM would not meet all of your needs. It will do anything the 06 or 300 Win Mag will do and in a smaller package.

I am a huge fan of the 300 rum, but only because I reload, and have mine shooting so well. The velocities im getting out of mine are lower, probably in the 300 wmag loaded hot range, I cant see why anyone could go wrong with the 300 win mag if they dont handload. Ammo is easy to find and a wide variety. The 300 rum factory ammo is expensive ~ $32 a box and only 2 or 3 companies make ammo for it.
