If you dont reload, the 300win mag is the ticket, great power, cheap and plentiful ammo. If you handload take your pick, although I think that the 300RUM is a better choice than the 300weatherby because of cheaper ammo w/ pretty much the same performance. As for the 06 doing ANYTHING that the magnums will... ask yourself if you want me to drill you w/ a baseball(50mph) or randy johnson(100+mph), after all its thesame ball just a little faster.

I think that the WSM, Win Mag and the Wby MAg are all optimum calibers for elk....I would also consider the 325 WSM and 8 rem Mag.

Just ordered a 300WM mainly because it was a great value(Savage 112 FSAK = $310). The 300WSM, 300 WM and 30-06 are very close. The advantage does go to the 300WM if you reload with a quality 200 gr bullet and max powder. It then will make 338 WM power that the others just can't do because of reduced powder capacity. I have shot a 300UM and it as a lot of recoil and muzzle blast for the end result. Great ballistics but not worth the extra BANG! in my opinion.

Of all the magnums I'd probably select the .300 Ultra Mag for no other reasons than the non-belted case and the ability to handle the biggest bullets without serious reductions in performance. Keep the weight of the gun over 8lbs total and put a good pad on it and it'd be manageble with practice. If you want to shoot it a lot, put on a removable brake. It'd also give you a great reason to start handloading if you don't already.

all your going to get here is opinions. some people have different ways of thinking. if its possible try before you buy. i have both the .300 winmag and ultra mag and i can tell the difference in recoil. i did add the limb saver kick pad to the butt of my stock on the ultra mag and the recoil doesnt bother me at all.i had the 300 wsm for about 3 months before i traded it in on a .308. i didn't like the wsm at all. good luck.

Dk, why don't ya like the 300WSM? I loaded for both and currently have 300RUM. If I had it over again, I would had my gun built into a WSM than the RUM. I have a hard time finding a bad load for the WSM. But the 300RUM is alot more finicky.

the .300 wsm is an excellent round sorry i didnt tell more. i had the .300wsm in the savage rifle with the ballistic plex Springfield armory scope on it. that scope is calibrated for the .308 round not the .300wsm round. you know that the .300wsm shoots much flatter than the .308 so i wasn't getting the results i wanted at the long ranges. it wasnt the round itself that i didnt like, it was the results. and the recoil on it was like that of the RUM. you could say that i should've tried the wsm with a different scope but i didn't. i do not have the capabilities nor the time to handload my ammo. that being said, i have found a rifle in the .300 rum that is very accurate with factory loads. if i had my .300rum and a .300wsm laying side by side shooting factory ammo, i would choose the .300rum.

I'd have to go with the 300 win mag ( of course my pet rifle is a ruger 77 in 300 win mag). One advantage you have is almost every place carries ammo for the 300 win mag.

30'06.....then you can use it for everything else and have fun shooting w/o punishing your body...my 2 cents.
