30-30 winchester
I believe i'm going to purchase a 30-30 winchester (Probally in a marlin). I'm hunting in Maine where there is a lot of bursh but there are a few clear areas. what is the effective range of the 30-30 for deer? i've herd 175-250 yards. But i think you guys will know. also is the 30-30 a humane choice for moose? shots under 100 yards.
thanks for your help. |

RE: 30-30 winchester
I think 150 yards would be pushing a 30-30's bullet? As to shoot a Moose?I don't think i would venture to try that!I'm not saying it can't kill one but it have to be a very well placed shot!

RE: 30-30 winchester
Buy it, shoot it so you get good with it, and you'll kill any deer that lives in Maine out to 150 yards.

RE: 30-30 winchester
eh id say about 150-200 yards, and mebe 150 or closer and a extremely well placed shot for moose. It'll get'er done!

RE: 30-30 winchester
For moose I would feel better using something else. For that matter I would feel better using something else on deer if shots will be over 100 yards.

RE: 30-30 winchester
150 yards for deer. I would not try Moose past 100 yards Max. The 170 grainer will take moose out to 100 yards. This I have seen done quite a few times. However the guy that I saw do it often was a crack shot and that 30-30 was the only rifle he ever owned so it got the call for everything in Canada.

RE: 30-30 winchester
If you're going to go with a 30-30, then a Marlin is the one to get. Good guns.
However, if you really expect shots on deer, etc. out to 175-250yds. then you should look to another rifle/cartridge. The 30-30 is at its' best within 150yds. Suggest you look to cartridges such as 270Win., 280Rem., 7mmRem.Mag., 308Win., 30-06, etc. As for moose, yes, a 30-30 can do the job if the range is limited, and the shot placed precisely, but there are better cartridges for moose, such as those noted. |
RE: 30-30 winchester
30/30 is not for long distances for sure. I wouldn't shoot over 100 yards with it for deer, even though it is capable of 150 yard shots if you are a skilled shooter. As for moose, I wouldn't reccomend it even at close range, not saying it won't do the job, just saying I would use a caliber with a little more wallup to it.

RE: 30-30 winchester
i aint sayin nuttin that aint be said before, i love the 30 30, great deer gun, for the deer i use 150gr pmc starfire, but i hear the deer get big in maine so you might wanna go with a 170gr, i dunno about moose never even seen anything more than a track, all i know is the track was HUGE bigger than any cow track i;ve ever seen. i;ll say it can be done just get close aim good. and be picky with your shots. oh and i heard good things about the federal 170gr nosler partitions. keep those in mind.
