the most exotic cartridge ever

does anyone know of any really rare calibers? If so what are they? I know of several kind of rare calibers (ex: 308 Norma Mag, 338-06, 8-06..etc) but none that are unheard of.

there are tons of those wildcat cartridges... The rarest guns I have in my collection are the 22-K hornet and the 357 Herrot (sp?).

thanks guys, i was just curios, but on the 338-06 i mentioned earlier, is anyone familiar with it? Where can I get more info on where to purchase stuff for this caliber because I am interested in building one?

I have no experience with that caliber... But I have a question for you? Why build one... It is almost guaranteed to be ballistically similar to the 30-06. I think we get overly fascinated with the wildcat cartridges for no real reason... Although my 22-K hornet got me into reloading, so that is a positive.

Not sure if anyone is making rifles for 338-06 now, but I believe A-Square was, and is still making ammo for it. Might have been Weatherby made some rifles for it.
It would make a nice chambering, but not sure as how much edge you would have over
a 35Whelen.
Heck, I'd like to see a 338-08 (.338 bullets with 308Win. case), but then we had/have the
358Win., and it didn't take off too well as a factory offering either. Seems like anything over 30calibur doesn't do too well without a magnum moniker, and a belted case.
A shame.

I believe it was Weatherby that chambered the 338-06 at one time. They still make ammo for it. For $50/box of 20 rounds.

There are literally hundreds of wildcats out there, many of which are one of a kind.

Probably one of the most notable I've stumbled on is the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer (no joke). I found it while browsing www.reloadersnest.com . According to the brief background for the round, it was designed by none other than P.O. Ackley in an attempt to break 5000fps in a small arm. It was a .224cal cartridge based on the .378 Weatherby Magnum case! And people think a .220 Swift is a barrel burner! :D
