RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
I'd say your ready, but I'd have to see a few more 3 three shot groups to call your shooting typical. I think you got a little lucky with those longer range shots. But you gotta like em!

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
Your shooting looks good and you have made a real effort to see where your gun will shoot out to 400 yards but your method and your results are a little flawed. You need to fire more than two shots for a group to verify trajectories.Your writing on the backboard indicates that your bullets dropped an additional 5" for each 50 yard increase from 250 yards to 400 yards.Since your bullets are slowing down all the time they should drop noticeably more at each 50 yard interval than they did at the previous one.An extra shot or two at each distance would probably show this. This will probably not make a great deal of difference on your hunt and you are are better prepared than many hunters are.Just providing a little information that may help you in the future.

Were your 300+ yard shots taken from sandbags on a solid benchrest?
If so, are you planning on taking a banchrest with sandbags on your elk hunt, or are you planning on firing a few hundred practice rounds at those distances from improvised rests, sitting, or prone? Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms... who's bringing the chips? |

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
otis,
I think you forgot to notice how UGLY a Tikka actually is. Here's a line for you. "Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun." Actually, I'm just joking. To each him own. I don't care what people shoot/hunt with, at least we all have something in common. BTW, I hunt with Winchester's. |
RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
Moose-hunter-I will take an ugly accurate rifle over a pretty one that doesn't shoot as good anytime.I shoot only custom rifles myself but I spend my money only on things that improve the rifles accuracy or fuction.I don't mind spending money on match grade barrels, trued and lapped actions and mcmillan stocks but have no use for fancy wood stocks engraving or inlays.A tikka is not a pretty rifle but then most people buy them to hunt with not to look at.

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
stubblejumper,
I know what you're talking about exactly. That's why I bought Winchester's. Why fix won't ain't broken, you know? I don't need a custom barrel to kill a moose or brown bear every year. |

Some of you guys are little testy here<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
I hunt with Winchester's, Tikka's have a little too much plastic for my liking. SUPPORT YOUR SPORT JOIN THE NRA |

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
I like Tikkas but their stocks are mgihty homely. The one that i saw are plain light colored stocks. I like a Rem or Win because they are beautiful guns. Thats why people buy Remingtons or Winchesters!!
Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!! |
RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
Theshooter-I do not buy remington because they are beautiful guns.I buy remington actions, premium barrels and use plain black fibreglass stocks because they provide me with a functional and accurate rifle.I buy my guns to hunt with not look at.If I wanted to buy a gun to look at I would buy a custom weatherby with nice wood and fancy engraving. However I would not hunt with such a decoration.

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
Otis-My gunbuilder actually buys complete rifles as they are almost as cheap as barreled actions and you can sell the leftover stock and barrel to get back some of your money. The model 7 synthetic stocks can be opened up enough to fit most calibers if you keep the barrel contour on the lighter side.

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
Otis-I have had good luck with pac-nor,schneider,hart and kreiger.Ross spagrud(the owner of prairie gun works)uses mostly pac-nor barrels.I have original triggers on all my 700's but they are tuned for 44oz.

RE: Tikka 7 Mag Results
My gunbuilder is www.prairiegunworks.com .They build complete rifles, rebarrel and bed actions and do some machining but they are not a general gunsmith who repairs guns or does minor work like many other gunsmiths.
