45-70 for 16 year old
 

Hi, i just turned 16 and i looking for a brush gun. i want one that can take moose/ek. i can shoot a 2.75 twelve gauge fine and i was wondering if the 45-70 recoil would be more/less than my 12. i'm not scronny but not huge ethir. what do you all think?

Hi Redsox:

The 45-70 is my brush gun of choice and you can load it up to as much pain as you can take. The Rem factory loads are "soft", as many people shoot them out of the trapdoor models which are not as strong as the Marlin. The Rem factory loads will have much less felt recoil than your shotgun. Stick a few Garrett's in there, hold on... www.garrettcartridges.com will give you the "plus" side of this cartridge, taking elephant, rhino, lion and cape buff. You can read the "minus" side of this round at www.accuratereloading.com, on the african hunting forum. Regardless of which side you prefer, you will be well prepared for moose and elk.

You can shoot a couple of boxes of the Remington .45-70 ammo with maybe a sweatshirt on and you probably wont even bat an eye. Guys at the range thought I was nuts once I was shooting mine in a long-sleeve t-shirt. People who dont know any better hear .45-70, and they start looking at you like you're shooting a .700NE from the hip.

Like Co.Elk said, there's plenty of ammo out there for this gun that will be good for elk and moose. It'll kick a good bit more, but just get used to shooting the Remington stuff first and work up to the heavy stuff.

Weather or not the 45-70 is an African rifle depends much on the ability of the hunter. The Marlin has taken the big five and or big six in Africa several times. Most game over there is taken with the Garret or Corbon loads however many of the LBT cast bullets have had great success on the worlds biggest and most dangerous game. I have used it quite a bit in the past but well make absolulely no recommendations one way or the other as I think that its up to each hunter to use however much gun they personally need to make a good safe clean kill. The 45-70 will and has done it many times. In answer to North American game, there is nothing here that cannot be taken well with a 45-70 roaded to its upper levels. This goes in spades for the Ruger NO.l in that caliber.
