Big Game Rifle

I am looking to purchase a nice big game hunting rifle. I will be hunting anywhere from whitetails to elk and maybe a moose. I was looking at the Weatherby 30-378. The ballistics were amazing on this gun. I was also looking at a Leupold Var X III. What do you think about the rifle first? Scope?

well it is a great gun and my favorite scope but you may find yourself overguned. there's alot of recoil that comes with those ballistics. but it would make a great setup if you can handle the punishment it deals out.

i would look into the 300 win mag or a 338 win mag

I would stay with a standard magnum or a newer short magnum.

Game animals could care less about the charts of data shooters concern themselves with. A gun of adequate caliber, proper bullet construction, and shot placement is what kills the heck out of game.

I have limited experience, but from all my reading, hearing accounts of others, etc. it seems to me that the 378 would be overkill. As for the optics, check www.opticstalk.com for good information.

The 30-378 is a nasty round to shoot. Around double the recoil of a 30-06. Also the shells cost about 4 times what a standard chambering would cost. If you handload then its not so much a problem. I would look at a 7mm or 300 mag. They will kill anything you hunt easily. Also you can find ammunition everywhere with the standard mags, not so with a weatherby round.

Other than the Vanguard, You coukld not even pay me to own a weatherby rifle. I had one and would never own another. It was a Piece of crap. If you like the big boomers I would lookmat a 300 Win Mag or 300 WSM. Either will knock the socks off anything in North America.

Have you checked the prices for a box of 30-378's? My bet is when you see it, you will probably change your mind. If you are hung up on getting a .308 cal. gun, check the ballistics of the 300 ultra mag. Factory ammo for that is about $28. If thats too salty, check out a 300 wim mag.

I agree with the others. If you need a magnum look the the 300 Winchester magnum or the 300 WSM. Very nice rifles are chambered for these rounds. They are plenty flat shooting and much more manageable than the 30-378. Also, you can handle these round without the need for a muzzlebrake.

Your right 308. But it seems it must wear the magnum name or have 5000 lbs ME to do the job on today's much tougher big game.

If your not used to shoot magnums then DONT buy a 30-378[:@].
Ive shot a sako trg 30-378 that my friend had and its not wery pleasant, he sold that thing and got himself a nice 300 win mag but only after developing a nasty flinch after being beaten to crap by that sako!
Plus the ammo is too expensive, IMHO

The Weatherby Mark V .30-378 is a great rifle. I would attach a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44, or a Pentax Lightseeker II 4-16x44 scope on it. Good luck.

If you want the type of energy you get with the 30-378 then you would be better off with a bigger calliber especially for the bigger critters. You might want to check out the CZ550 Magnum rifles, a real good deal for the money and they come with a single set trigger. You can get them in anything from 300 mag to the .416 Rigby and COMMING SOON the .505 Gibbs.

if it feels like a moose kicked you in the shoulders i think its a bit much
but hey we all have are own ideas 7mm 308 both good guns

RE: Big Game Rifle

The 30-378 is a nice addition if you already have a few hunting rifles.However it is a very poor choice for a one gun hunter.Due to the extreme recoil and extreme high cost of ammunition you will not want to practise with this rifle so you will not develop and maintain the shooting skills necessary to take advantage of the great ballistics.

RE: Big Game Rifle

The 30-378 would be a good "do-all" choice. I just picked up My "do-all" rifle 375-Remington Ultra Mag.
I also think a Leupold VX-III is a good choice.

Good Luck,

WK

It's getting tougher all the time. Here's this years recommended minimums:

Crow, squirrel & rabbit = 30-06 or 7mm Rem.Mag.
Antelope = 300 Magnum
Deer (whitetails) = 338 Mag.
Deer (mulies) = 375 H&H
Elk = 416 Mag. (Rem. or Rigby)
Moose = 460 Wthby.Mag.
Elephant = 50BMG

These ought to do, for a year or two;)

Oh, and BTW, for those big bears, carry some GRENADES!:eek:

That's hilarious. To think all I have is only capable of hunting crow, squirrel and rabbit. Dangit! What about a bazooka?? I want to get ahead of the curve here.

Bazookas rate right in there with RPGs, and grenades. To get ahead of the curve, start to stockpile those WMDs now - they'll be needed for deer in a few years. Just think, you can plant your WMD along a trial, climb up into your treestand, wait for that armor plated
whitetail to come by, and trip the trigger by remote - kaboom, deer down ;)
