Either that, or looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle!
looking for an excuse: As I tell my wife I don't have a rifle/pistol in that caliber yet,my rifle is lever action this one is a bolt action,I worked 20 hrs. overtime so I could buy it .the excuses are endless.but the only one you need is YOU WANT IT so buy it.

30.06...NO WAY! small arms fire usually just bounces right off 'em. I tried to tell a friend that a few years back..all they found of him was a few peices of blaze orange and drag marks out into the desert..poor guy.
I can relate. This season I hit a 19 inch antelope broadside in the ribs with my 416 Rem Mag at 150 yards. Just a slight penetration; then he charged me. Shot him three more times and you could see where they were hitting, right on the chest. Didn't faze him. Fortunately I am trained in prong won do and was able to duck under with one knee and got him in a figure 4 half horn nelson. Snapped his neck and it was over. I got the whole thing on video with my other hand, but the tape got recorded over.

I take pronghorns with a 30-06 regularly out to 300 yds. no problem. Measured with a lazer range finder. This year one at 270 yds. It is a great cartridge and has been used for pronghorn since it was developed about 100 years ago.

I hunted the little speedsters this year for the first time and yup it was alot of fun! There is very little difference in 300 yd trajectories between a 3006, .270 or for that matter a 25-06 when all sighted in the same shooting high BC bullets. Now if I was going to buy a rifle just for lopes, either a 25-06 or .257 weatherby would get my nod.

The 30-06 is great for goats, use the light bullets, sight in for 2-250yds, go kill a goat.

a 308 better than a 30-06 if your worried about bullet drop?

Tex, I like the way you think.

Maybe I need a .308 and a .243. Toss in a .270, just to be safe.

Moose, Your '06 will do just fine. My friend and I went on an antelope/mulie combo hunt this past year. He only brought 180 SP handloads on this hunt and took a nice antelope buck at a ranged 350 yards with one well placed shot. The buck probably ran about 50 yds with a bullet thru his heart.
