I dont understand the reasoning for you deducting some of these calibers
Me neither. But using your criteria,I would choose the 25-06.

I would possibly use the .308 Win. in a pinch, but that is the only caliber I would use you listed. Good luck.

.338 Remington Ultra Mag...well, it's not on your "do not want" list and will smack the crap out of a deer at any range you can hit it at, and it'll smack the crap out of you too!

Seriously,

If it were only for deer, I'd go with the .25-06. If you ever think you'll want to hunt elk I'd go with the .260 Rem or the 7mm-08. But for deer at those ranges I'd personally choose the .25-06 first.

280 AI... all the punch of the 7mag but a lot less recoil, easy reloading, and in a pinch you can shoot off the shelf 280 ammo with great sucess...

Hehe. I love the guys who think only mags will kill out past 300. The old 45-70's and 50-110 class cartridges did that and then some. (Say way more, "some") No offence guys. Why not look into somthing just a bit more out of the way. How about a 7x57? Or 6.5x55? I don't care who say's what, they will do the job if you will. You'll also have somthing a little more unique than the next guy. Good shooting.

I would have to go with the .308 because of the vast suply and types of ammo avalable. And if it is what our military chose for there snipper rifles it must do the job

I think you are doing it backwards...If you are determined to kill deer, at what all of us should consider "long range"....You should buy the correct tool for the job....Something like a Remington Sendero in .300 Mag...with a muzzlebreak (and ear plugs)...and practice A LOT!!!! A higher powered tactical scope would also help...Good Luck

The only one on your list that should be used past 300yds is the 25-06. Based on your criteria I dont think you understand long range shooting enough to try it on animals. targets, knock yourself out, but you owe it to the animals to use the right tool on them. You eliminated all the long action rifles, long shots are EXACTLY what they are made for, otherwise we'd all be useing short actions out west , which is the exception not the rule(the short mags are the exception). I'd say get a 25-06,270,264win,280,7mag,30-06,300 mag.

Well i am glad thats its you shooting at deer at 300 to 450 yds. I prefer a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser to assinate my game with Barnes X bullets! it will reach out there with the best of them just not as speedy. It does have the SD to do the job when it gets there. I usually take my Mohawk 600 243 for the local Tn. deer in these woods .[&:]
