RE: what to get
If you are already worried about turning your shoulder into hamburger then I doubt that you would want a magnum. You can't go in to shoot a magnum and be worried about the kick cause they are ging to kick. No way around it. If you have your mind made up about a gun hurting you then odds are that it will. Regardless if it actually did or not.
If you mainly want the rifle for white tail deer then II suggest a .243, .257 Roberts, 260 Rem, 7mm-08, .308, 25-06, .270. .280, or 30-06. Any of these calibers listed will take the largest of deer and some will work quite well for even larger game. |
RE: what to get
from what Ive read and seen on different site the only advantage with a wssm's over the original cartidge is the shorter action. I came to this concusion by looking at ballistics. but if you want a hunting catridge in wssm i would go with a new 25 wssm, it has heavier bullets then the 243. I already have a 243 it works great for deer and my dad used it for moose for many years. a 270 wsm would also be a good choise for a lighter kicking catridge compaired to the 300wsm. but if you get a BOSS on a browning rifle it will reduce your recoil greatly.heres a link to compair a 25 wssm toa 25-06 there the same thing just action length is the only advantage.

RE: what to get
A 7mm/08 is a mild cartridge that is very potent on medium-sized game. Recoil is not painful but its ballistics compare favorably with the .280 Remington. It's a very capable deer cartridge out to the 400 yard line.

RE: what to get
ORIGINAL: bigbass191 i am looking for i new gun like a wsm or a wssm what do you think would be best for big game hunting and something that won't turn my shoulder into hamburger thank you for the help!! 270WSM. Slightly less recoil, and just as good IMO, is the old standard 270Win. which can be had in any number of good rifles by any of the major manufacturers. Watch the stock design - those with the least drop are best (ex: Win. Featherweight, Remington Mountain Rifles, Ruger 77MKII). |
RE: what to get
I like the old tried and true .270 win but I also am beginning to like the wsm calibers as well

RE: what to get
I'm thinking "what to get" depends on YOU and your Ideals...I went into my local hunting Shangri-la (sportsmans warehouse) today and through a sea of shoppers I tread to the gun counter. I had to wait at about row 3 just observing to the various hunters pawing at their "wanting to get" rifles.
My observation: There is a definite call for the WSM family. Anyone under the age of 35 was fondling one. Even some of the oldtimers who I would be expecting to be handling something in a lever action..were talking short mags..a seasoned hunter commented "to tell you the truth, I want one because I think they're neat. My explanation: I think it is like anything new, in the technology sense, where this years model (simply because it is new) has an exotic edge over "last years model" Performance aside, (as so many cartridges will perform the required task) This is not a Life/Death decision. You can get prepackaged meat with far less trouble than hunting it down yourself, so the subjective choices really are in play. (blondes or brunettes) Yes, You will get frowned at for hunting with a .223 on CXP3 game but you can explode rabbits with a 300wsm and nobody will care. Do you do any shooting/ hunting and with what. That will tell us what you're sholder is used to. |
RE: what to get
The 270-wsm or standard 270-winchester would be a good choice.
