i can purchase a savage package serices synthetic stock rifle for around 350. i can get a NEF rifle for about 200 + 80 for a scope. so about 280$ for a NEF or 350$ for a savage.
i'm in maine so the shots will mostly be heavaly wooded area

I'd get the savage personally. They're extremely accurate guns, not very pretty, but neither are the NEF. The scope probably won't be worth a flip...most package scopes aren't. There's nothing wrong with the NEF, besides possibly rate of fire. I haven't had much luck beyond 250yds with them, though. Depends a lot on the caliber I guess.

There is a lot to be said for the Savage but the NEF/HR are not bad themselves. If on a budget I would get the NEF and spend the $150 diff. on a reasonably good scope. The scope that comes with the Savage package is junk, you would be paying $350 + scope for the package deal.

The savage for sure. My son shoots an NEF in .243 win but the Savage is a much better rifle in my opinion.
