Difference between a 11-48 and 1100 ?
 

Trying to find a used light kicking 20 gage shotgun for my wife. She got a turkey last spring but the gun bruised her badly. I know nothing about shotguns except point and shoot. I've been offered a nice 11-48 and a 1100 Rem at a good price but what is the difference in them ?

I'm assumming you mean 11-87. The 1100 is 2 3/4" chamber. The 11-87 is 3" chamber. If I am not mistaken, that is the difference. I bought my wife an 1100 slug gun this year. She loves it. This is the one she has.

OK, The 11-48 has the patented browning recoil barrel. Not exactly sure what that is, but that is the difference. I would buy the 1100 for her. I started shooting an 1100 in 12 ga when I was 10. With target loads, it is very mild. Even with my wifes gun, with sabot slugs. I was impressed by how it shot. Hope this helps.

The Browning recoiling barrel is essentially the same system Browning used on the Auto 5's. It is a recoil operated system and vents no gas onto the moving parts. But everything needs to be clean and in good working order for the system to operate properly.

At the shot the barrel and the bolt are locked together and recoil back together. After they reach the rearward position the bolt unlocks from the barrel and the barrel then begins to move forward and ejects the fired shell. When the barrel gets back into its foward position a new shell is then released from the magazine tube which lets the bolt slide forward and chamber the new shell. Pull the trigger and repeat.



The 1100 is a gas operated system that vents gas from the barrel through one or two ports and drives back a piston which inturn drives back the bolt. It operates just like most any gas operated shot gun or rifle today. They get dirty and can be a PITA to get clean. Oil is the enemy of a gas operated semi auto as it will only serve to collect carbon deposits and build up crud quick, fast, and in a hurry.
