The recoil will or should only be an issue for the first year? I would pick the 30-06 out of the two you mentioned.
Others to consider are: 25-06, 270, 7mm-08 & 308.

Good Luck,

WK

I believe that the Savage 99 is available in .308 -- this would obviously be a used gun. Based on my research, I think that this is the route to take, but I'd like to shoot one.

.308 lever? Do they even make a lever action in that caliber?

I like what North Texan said.... I too have a Marlin 30-30 and love it. It goes anywhere and does anything - but out to about 150 yards max. The 30-30 is legendary and has been around since the stone age. [8D] You also have to consider the prices of ammo too. (i.e. the best bang for the buck in rifle, and the best bang for the buck in ammo).

I will assume you mean the 7mm-mag has too much bark. but what about the 7mm-08? low recoil, accurate, and will reach out 250+ yards. IMO, this is a caliber not to be overlooked for what you want.

I've got a Marlin 30-30 and think it is a wonderful gun but I want a round that is more versatile for big game in Colorado. There are a lot of 100 yard shots here, but you also have opportunity for shots out to 300. I would go for the .308 BLR for versitility. I've been debating between the 30-06 and .308 for a while and figured that it still comes down to preference, but it seems like the .308 would suit you fine for your purposes.

I agree on the 7mm-08, you can use to 300-350 easily, and with a limb saver recoil pad you won't even feel the recoil. 7mm-08 has better ballistics than the 30-30 and not too terribly behind the 30-06.

I own a .308 winchester lever action model 88; that gun will drive tacks. I shot a few handloads through it this year and the difference between factory and handloads was next to nothing. It's a very nice gun.

1894 all the way. 30-30 is th choice although it will limit your shot to 200yds. I shot a 190 class buck at 400 with a .280
30-30 is your gun

Get the .30-06 and use Remington Managed Recoil ammo until you can withstand the full loads. The ammo is designed for shots up to 200 yards.
