Surface rust on gun

I've tried wiping down with oil real hard & can't quite get it all off. Any ideas?

I've used a pencil eraser. Works for light rust and won't hurt the bluing.

I had light surface rust and used WD-40, a tooth brush, and steel wool (000) and it seemed to work pretty good. Let the WD-40 sit overnight.

My mother recently gave me my father's old 12 gauge shotgun. It was a single shot made by Cresent Arms and the last one that they made was in 1930, so it is at least 74 years old. My father had passed away in 1991 and I had lived out west until just recently. The gun had sit in the closet since Dad passed away and was literally covered in rust. The WD-40, gun oil, and along with some very fine steel wool done an excellent job on this gun, the barrel amost looks new. I have had several people comment on how nice this gun looks and it certainly has great sentimental value for me.

Gun oil and fine steel wool (000) should do the trick.

I would use WD40 or similar and 4 ought (0000) steelwool it's finer then 3 ought and would be easier on the bluing.

I agree with the other posts but the green scotch bright pads work well and are even easier on the metal's finish. Use plenty of oil, on the metal and on the steel wool/scoth bright pad, good luck.
