Scope for a Remington model seven 7mm/08

My brother is getting his son (age 14) his first hunting rifle for Christmas this year. He's leaning heavily towards the Remington model 7 SS in the 7mm/08 caliber. He'll be hunting whitetail and mule deer with it. He asked me for a recommedation for a scope for this rifle and he has a budget of less about 250 dollars. What would you guys recommend for this setup? I'm trying to keep weight and complexity down.
thanks,
will

Check out Leupold Vari-X II, 1-4x or the 2-7x scopes.

I have a weaver straight 4 power on my 7mm-08, you never can forget that it is on 9 when a deer comes running through - I like that - very clear and compact, $130.00, hard to go wrong. here's a link to it on Midwayusa http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/174349

I would consiuder the Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40 with Fast Focus. Great little scope, good optics and features (rainguard, 1 piece tube, fully multi coated, lifetime warranty, etc) Should be able to find it for around 200.

Man, It seems like we go over and over this...

Anyway I have a model 7 in 7mm-08, it feels real nice to me, but the recoil is more than I would like for a 7mm-08.

If you are looking for a "budget" scope go with the Simmons Aetec...
why? because it is fully multicoated, has very good eye relief and can be had for around 100 dollars.

The Bushnell 3200 is a good choice as well, but the eye releif isn't as good and costs almost twice as much (~200).

Don't be bullied into buying a Leupold VX-1 or Rifleman, Way overpriced for what they are... Not fully multicoated = lower light transmission and will cost you up to 200 dollars.

If you really like Leupold products consider Sightron scopes, they make the lenses for Leupold and can be had for approximately 25-33% cheaper.

I haven't tried the Weaver Grand Slams, but have heard good things about them. I really like Nikon Monarch scopes, but some say they aren't as durable as the others. I have had no problems. I would not consider they Nikon Prostaffs, I am not really sure what the Nikon Buckmaster offers in terms of Fully multicoating, but the eye releif is not really that good on any of the Nikons.

Hope that will help if not confuse you more...

I would mount a Leupold-Fixed Power Riflescope 4x33. Good luck.

I habve always been a big fan of leupolds, however, the simmons aetec that i owned for a brief period surprised me. For around 175 to 200 dollars it is extremely clear, performs well in low light conditions and I liked the feel of it more than my more pricely leupolds! Mine was a matte finished 2.8-10x44WA. It also comes with a sunshade, which i had never seen before. You may give it a look, just a suggestion.

3-9x40 loopy VX-I will do fine and cost less than the newer VX-II and IIIs.

I bought a model 7 in a .260 for my sons and put a 3-9X40 VX-11, very nice setup.
