The 308 has better energy and knock down power than the 30-06

sniper -I think your mistaken about the 308 having more punch than the 06, its the other way around. You are right about the 06 handleing the bigger bullets better though.

If you'd like a 280, but are worried about finding factory ammo, then buy a 7mm-08. It'll have plenty of pop out to 300 yds, and is available in most stores.

For deer hunting out to a range of 300yds., I'll vote for either the 280 or the 308.
If you want to throw in elk/moose, then opt for the 7mmRem.Mag.
