Scope reticle
Hello everyone,
What is the best Leupold scope reticle for a VX-II 3-9x40, assuming that the varying cost is not an issue? I plan on using it for deer hunting with a 30-30. The types include Duplex, Wide Duplex, Heavy Duplex, German #1, German #4, CPC, Leupold Dot, and Post & Duplex. http://www.leupold.com/products/products_highlights.asp Here is leupold's website that displays the various reticles. Thanks and have a happy thanksgiving! |
RE: Scope reticle
Red, it all depends on what type of hunting you plan on doing. Mentioning that it’s a 30-30 sound like it’ll be in heavy bush so I would suggest the heavy duplex but if it’s open plain I would then suggest the duplex or wide duplex. I’m have never used the German reticles so I can’t comment on them. The dot is usually used for target shooting. The best thing is to go out and check them out in person if you can. Good luck....

RE: Scope reticle
I have 2 Leupold VX-II 3x9x40 on my deer rifles...one a Ruger .243 and one a Knight Disc...Both came with the standard reticle...I sent both back to Leupold and had the Heavy Duplex installed....I love it...easier to see during low light, easy to pickup in woods...and isn't too large to affect my long range shooting....I'm approaching 50...it sure helps as your eyes get older...

RE: Scope reticle
Personally the standard duplex Leupold uses I find to be very thin for my biggame hunting needs, especially in quick acquire or low light situations. I am not that old and have excellent vision but really like a reticle when I bring it up the crosshairs jump out at me, as such I prefer the heavy in Leupold. The heavier duplex has never caused me any problems on those longer range shots either.
Like trailer said best to judge for yourself. |
RE: Scope reticle
Thanks guys,
I'll go ahead and get the heavy duplex, since it is the overwhelming majority pick. Plus, as you guys said, this would work very well against a heavily wooded background for easy acquisition and for big game. |
