Default WD-40

I've seen my trap buddies spraying their guns down, chamber, bore, the whole thing with wd-40 right after our rounds are finished. It blasts the black gunk right out of them. My question is this: Is WD-40 heavy enought for this purpose? Is it really cleaning the gun? Anybody else use this stuff to clean their guns?

What I'm thinking is spray the chamber and bore with WD-40, heavily, let sit for a few minutes and then run the BoreSnake through it. Sound effective?

KING HUGH,
The beauty of WD-40 used in this way it that it softens grit and carbon so when you do clean, it's much easier. WD-40 will also remove fingerprints and the salts and acids of them, as well as displace any dampness that may cause rust. Good luck.

I bet it works better than dish washing liquid and a scouring pad.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have always used WD-40. I've never had any problems or jams.

I really don't like to clean my guns with WD-40, it is a magnet for dust and other trash that will form a heavy &quot;crud&quot; on certain parts of the gun if you don't watch it. You also need to make sure that it doesn't get on any of your shells, it will ruin them.

I like to use a can of compressed air, followed up with a little Rem Oil, the teflon based stuff doesn't seem to collect dust quite as bad.

No, I don't think spraying your gun down with anything is &quot;really cleaning&quot; a gun. You would need to break it down and scrub it for me to consider it &quot;really cleaning&quot; a gun...but spraying it down with any rust preventative is preferable to doing nothing.

Gordon

WD-40 is a fairly good cleaning agent. However, IT WILL FREEZE! A fellow I rabbit hunt with sprayed his .410 Rem 1100 with WD-40. About 2 years ago, we were hunting in January and the temp was right around zero. The action froze up tighter than a drum. He had sprayed it liberally with WD-40, so moisture was probably not present.

I've not had any problem with it when I've used it, though.

I now use a product called Nelco Free-it. It's like WD-40.

RIG is another quality product.

Hey guys, if you wanna try a really neat product that works like &quot;Gun Scrubber&quot;, try CRC's &quot;Electronic parts cleaner&quot;. It comes in a red spray can and is shelved at most auto parts stores. CRC makes many products, including one called &quot;electronic motor cleaner&quot;. DO NOT use that one your guns. It leave a film that needs to be wiped off after you spray it and has a hard time evaporating, unlike the &quot;electronic parts cleaner&quot;.

I use it because it's a couple bucks cheaper than gun scrubber.

I usually pre soak my bores/actions with &quot;Shooter's choice&quot; bore solvent, then use a nylon gun brush to scrub the slides, actions etc... I use a bronze brush for the barrel. Then to get all of the junk out, I spray the entire gun with the electronic parts cleaner (or gun scrubber). Then the gun is totally dry. I usually spray a coating of WD40 on the outside finish of the gun and use breakfree or shooters choice oil (FP-10) which lasts longer and doesn't evaporate like break free does after prolonged storage.

I go through a ritual when cleaning my guns. They all have names and they all talk to me!!!!!!!!! (not really....just kidding).
