If is an exmilitary rifle, check the bore before buying, if it looks really dark and rough, you might want to pass it up. If its shiny with few or no pits, then definately buy it. Some old rifles with dark pitted bores shoot great, but its not as likely as with a rifle a good barrel.

If you really want a nice shooting 8mm for around $100 and don't mind the extra weight and the long barrel, try to find one of the Czech BRNO 98/22's on the market. I have 2 of them and they are some of my favorite rifles, both will shoot surplus 8mm ammo into 2" with iron sights. Also, I haven't heard or seen any of these that don't shoot well or have bad bores.
