7mm08 and .30-06

When would it be a good idea to use one caliber or the other. 7mm08 micro medallion and a .30-06 m77 are the two rifles I have. I just pick up the ruger in all weather and I really like the way it shoots. The 7 08 is very accurate as well. Which of the two is better for longer shots like big green fields, thick brush, and hardwoods. I love both of my rifles but I can't use but one at a time. Can't wait till opening weekend.

welcome borty, for all around shooting long range to short i'd still take the o6, if your not sure about the range, i have a 7mm-08 and love it but i would not take it to a big field that i may take a 300 yrd shot, hope that helps, best of luck this season

Personally I don't see a problem with a 300 yard shot from a 7mm-08 Rem.

Whichever one you shoot better.

The 06 would be my choice, I also have one in Ruger M77.

my 7mm-08 is a 15" encore, i probably should have mentioned that, its got a fixed 4X leupold, if you can kill a deer at 300 with it i'd tip my hat to you, the maximum effective range for me is limited to 150 on this pistol, on a rifle i don't think a 300 yard shot is out of the question. but if i'm hunting a big bean/corn field where a shot could be 300-500 i'll be taking my 7mmSTW.

like i've said before its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it

M.T.

No one should know your weapons and their capabilities and your capabilities vis a vis your hunting challenges more than you.

For me to speculate on how you should use them across such a broad spectrum of possibilites would be pure supposition and guess work on my part --- had plenty of that in this just finished electorial campaign. I'm sure you already know or will soon answer those issues to your satisfaction and that is what will truly count in the finally tally.

Good luck,
EKM

Yeah that would make a difference. I shoot 7mm-08 Rem out of rifles though and either one will shoot 300 yards all day long and carry more downrange energy than a 308 Win. The 7mm-08 gets sold short on its potential. It is a great cartridge, right up there with the 270 Win.
