coyote gun - AR?
 

I am currently shopping for a coyote gun...

I think I have decided on a semi-auto .223, for various reasons (second shot, like the caliber,etc.)

I also have thought long and hard about getting an AR... I am not ussually a fan of military guns, matter-of-fact I ussually turn up my nose to "those" tables at gun shows.

Having said all this, I recently read an article lauding the AR's capabilities. I think after doing some exhaustive research I have decided on the Rock River Arms (RRA) varminter.
It has a guaranteed 100 yard 3/4 moa, a free floated barrel, and a flat receiver. MSRP = $1000

A couple of questions...
1) do you guys like that choice, why/why not?
2) What length barrel should I get and why, 18, 20, 24 inch?
3) is the RRA the best bang for the buck?
4) what scope would you mount?

I have heard a lot of good about the Rock River rifle. Seems like a very good deal. I would probably go with the longer barrel lengths for velocity reasons. I currently have an 18" HBAR and do not achieve the velocity I would like.

The AR is an awsome little rifle. If you are buying a rifle to walk around with all day long get the one with the least amount of weight. Go with the 18 inch bbl and don't look back. Go with a 3x9 or 4x12 scope this gives you up close and long range set ups.

I have a Rock River upper 24" 1-12" twist flat top with the Wylde chamber . It is a great chuck and yote gun. Great accurey with my 55 gr V-Max load . The second shot has never been needed except for the 2 and 3 yote running to my call. I put a 6.5 x 20 Leupold Var X III on my gun (I had it) . If you build up a gun like I did , put a good light trigger in or have your worked on ,some stock triggers are HEAVY . Have fun busting yotes.

I agree with your thinking on the semi. Coyotes run I packs and multiple shots can mean multiple kills. If you walk a lot and if it is brushy go with a shorter barrel, it will make life a lot easier. I bought a mini 14 for my coyote gun, though not a truly informed decision (I wish I went with the AR) it does the job, and is not near 3/4 moa accurate, so anything shooting that well is much more that you can really use much less need in the field.
