Removing the Front Sight on a Winchester 94

So, I have a 94 Legacy and want to replace the front sight with a Williams Fire Sight fiber optic dot. Trouble is, I can't seem to get the front sight off. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

i cut the front site off of a ruger m77, it worked out ok only nicked the barrel in one little place, bottom side of the barrel, if i didn't show it to you you'd probably never see it. but if i were doing it again i would let a smith take care of it. should not cost much

In my 2003 Williams Gun Sight Co. catalog (page 20) they have a front sight pusher. It will push out the dovetail sight without marring the ramp. List price is $55.75.

just use a brass drift punch and and a small hammer and tap it out, thats all a gun smith will do.

Two things:

1) My Legacy doesn't have a ramp. The sight post is dovetailed directly into the barrel.

2) I tried the hammer/punch route and it wouldn't budge.

How hard should I be hitting it? I did the same thing to the rear sight and it punched out with only modest effort. The front post doesn't want to move...

Help...

do you have the gun in a solid vice when trying to remove the front post or are you just holding it?? if no vice availabe lay the barrel on a solid wood surface either way will keep the gun from moving, its very important that you do one of the 2 things i mentioned outerwise you be there all day trying to get the sight off.

If it is that tight you will probably have even more difficulty installing the new one. Before you mar up your gun too badly see a gunsmtih about removing and reinstalling with the proper tools. Might save you a lot of heartache. Usually hammer and punch works fine but extreme cases may call for a press type tool.

boy do i feel like a dummy, just goes to show you should always pay attention, duh:eek: that dovetail should drive right out, use the vise or wood like mentioned above, i had one on a m/ler that was difficult. but they will come out, sorry for the misinformation above :)
