Sentimental/First Rifles
I was interested to know what everyone's first rifle was or what they consider to be sentimental. Personally i started hunting with a win model 94 30-30 when i was twelve and loved the gun. I sold it a while back and regret it. Even though I am into the larger callibre's now i still miss my 30 and regret selling it every day. My younger brother has just began to hunt and I bought him a 94 30-30 and it brings back so many good memories and hunts. Even though many people critisize the 30-30 i beleive it is a fine deer rifle for shots around the 1-150 mark and especially in thick wooded areas!

RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
My First Rifle was a Marlin 336c Saddle Carbine in 30-30,it was my mothers and she gave it to me to hunt with my first year.
After that my father bought me a Remington Modle 7600 Game Master Pump in 30-06 so I could hunt elk. I still have both of those guns and would not part with either,I have bought and sold many guns, but these 2 will stay with me for ever, for my sons and daughters to shoot and pass along. |
RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
10/22 carbine
My grandpa would take me 'coon hunting and let me shoot it!!! I walked in one day and its laying out on the table. It was my 12th birthday, and the gun went home with me!!! I've often thought about selling to get a "serious" 22. But I know I would never forgive myself. |
RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
My very first centerfire rifle was a Springfield 1903A3, caliber .30-06, manufactured by Remington in August of 1944. I bought this rifle at The Grant Boys in Puente Hills Mall, Southern California, when I was a senior in high school in 1976. I was there after school with some friends, saw it, ran home and got my money, and came right back and bought it. I paid $55 for it. I paid my money, they put it into a long plastic bag with the receipt taped to it, and I carried it right through the shopping mall, out into the parking lot to my car and drove home.
Can you imagine a young man walking through a shopping mall today in Southern California carrying a rifle, even one poorly concealed in a long skinny bag? I'm sure he would draw fire![:@] I did carry this on a few hunting trips, never saw any critters, and it now is a treasured collector item. My dad had a similar 1903 Springfield in WWII, and I will always treasure this rifle because of that. |
RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
I used my dad's Marlin model 36A 30-30 to shoot my first deer when I was 15. Cancer took my dad away from me when he was only 56 and now that gun sits in my safe just waiting for my 5 year old son to grow up. The day he takes his first deer with it will be a proud and bittersweet day for me.

RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
My first rifle was a Stevens 46M 22lr given to me from my papaw while he was lying on his death bed. He didn't hunt much in his older days, but used that rifle to control the stray cat population in town where he lived. I'd fuss about him shooting a rifle in town, but he'd just say, "I've not hit anyone yet!" Old folk, man, you've got to love 'em!!

RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
Sad Story...
Yesterday, my father fell out of his tree stand... He really messed up his leg and is pretty bruised and battered... Worst part, his first "nice" rifle he purchased, a Ruger #1 .270 was all but destroyed. The stock is broken in 5 places, not really sure about the action. The older Leupold scope is toast, almost beyond recognition. I have never seen the old man so upset... It was like his hunting dog just died. He easily has the money to replace it and/or get it fixed, but I think it took the will out of him. His bruises will heal, but right now he can't even bring himself to look at the mangled gun! At least he didn't get hurt worse and maybe that is a lesson to all of us to take more care when getting down from our stands in the evening, I know I should wear a harness, but seldolm do... |

RE: Sentimental/First Rifles
My very first rifle was a Cooey-Winchester .22 repeater which will shoot all the .22 rounds interchangeably . It's 33years old now and still an ironsighted tack driver . The same day I got my Cooey ( 15th birthday ) Grandad pulled out a 1943 Canadian made .303brit Lee Enfield and I use this rifle for deer and moose every year since .
