Quilly,the 500 and the 835 have identical safeties.The 835 doesnt come with a rifled barrel it comes smoothbore with screw-chokes.The difference is chamber size.500=2 3/4 - 3inch 835 2 3/4-3.5inch.

rochelle,
Thank you for giving me a straight answer and following with the question I asked. I said, forget about the 870, in one of the posts. Thanks for giving me the answer I was looking for.

I have a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum, and I love it. However, my cousin, whom I hunt with alot has a Mossberg 835. He likes it very much. I have watched him down many a squirrel with it. I have noticed it didn't eject the shell a couple of times causing a click instead of a boom the next time he saw a squirrel. However, this could have been caused by not pulling the action back hard or far enough. I like his 835 very much and I think it would make you a good gun. I haven't seen a 500, but have heard they are good guns. Whichever you buy, enjoy it, Mossberg makes good guns as far as I'm concerned.

My son has a Mossberg 500 20ga and has both the rifled barrel and the smooth barrel with interchangable chokes and it is a fine gun. He has taken everything from squirrel and turkey to deer with it.

What the heck, I will jump in here too! I have an 835 that seems to be a pretty darn good shotgun. Not real pretty, but goes bang every time, and ejects everything I shoot. I got a heck of a deal on it and have never ran a 3 1/2 inch shell through it. I really see no reason for the long ones, but am not a turkey hunter, and like my geese real close....

I use my 835 for Turkey, geese, ducks and deer. I've only had one problem in 4 yrs. I pumped the forarm so hard I broke it in two pieces. I guess I got so excited at all the geese that were coming in I couldn't get the next shell in fast enough.
It shoots straight and is tough as they come for an all around gun.

I can't speak for the model 500,but I use my 835 on every thing I hunt except for deer. These guys can talk all they want about mossberg but mine has been used in all kinds of weather and has never failed me yet.
