2nd Caliber opinion: .270 Win.
O.k, I've got a taste of what some of you think of the .243, so how about another of my favorite's. The .270 Win. I feel it is a great, all around rifle. It is flat shooting, and packs a whollop. With the right bullet, it will kill any elk or moose, though it may be too small for the bigger stuff. I.e, Grizzly. It could quite be the next perfect step for a beginner to move up, and will do what it is asked to do. What's your take on this?

RE: 2nd Caliber opinion: .270 Win.
i love the round and i think it is a great "deer round' it has mild recoil and packs a good punch with 130 grain ammo. the prob. i see with it for larger animals is that it dosen't handle the larger "150grain" bullets nearly as well as the 130's because of the rifleing twist. yet i wouldn't have a custom barrel with a twist set up for the 150's because i could have the barrel made in a 7mm caliber and shoot larger 180 grain shells and have a better big game round such as the 280. this is the only flaw in the 270 if you ask me. but i don't know of many if any rounds that will handle deer better then a good 130 grain bullet shot from a 270.

Its pretty much ideal for a hunter who wants to go to walmart, buy a box of shells and be set for hunting. Nothing wrong with the .270.
I'd rather have a .280, 7x57, or a 284 winchester as 7mm's are alot more versatile to those who reload. Even the 6.5 Swede gives up very little to the .270 if handloaded to its potential. |

To me, it's one of the best. However, from .243 to .577T-Rex..If you hit em right, DEAD DEER.

I like it, Pharaoh2, in longer barrels. Ditto for the 25-06.

It was and still is my first Deer rifle.
I dont think you could ask for a better round for deer to Elk size game. hunter338 |

It's my all time favorite caliber, and yes you can buy ammo for them everywhere not just Wal-Mart, unlike some unpopular calibers mentioned.

The perfect deer and elk rifle. Will do very well on Moose with the heavier bullet. Old Jack was right in my book. Not quite as versitils as the 30-06 but real close.

RE: 2nd Caliber opinion: .270 Win.
.270 Win. is one of the best. A great all round cartridge. The .270Win. makes a good varmint cartridge for casual varminting on such as chucks and coyotes. It's probably
one of the best deer cartridges ever made, and with careful placement, and the use of premium bullets, can be used on Elk & Moose too. Accurate, mild of recoil. Excellent choice.:D |
