Ruger 10/22 ammo
 

I bought a brand new Ruger 10/22 about 7 years ago BUT I haven't even taken it out and fired it yet!;) I'm going to buy a scope for it soon and see how well it groups. .22's can be pretty picky about what ammo you feed them so I was wondering if you could tell me the brands that have given you the best results w/ your 10/22. I've got a decent supply of Federal ?Premium? copper coated bullets, Remington Yellow Jackets and Wildcats.

I was also considering using the open sights but I don't think I'd be harnessing the full potential of the 10/22 that way even though they are nice sights (I'm an average marksman at best). I'll be doing target practice mainly but possibly some game shooting (squirrel, rabbit).

I've got my eyes on one scope in particular; $100CDN installed. I'll stop by the shop later and post the model/specs.

Personally, I've never noticed that .22's are all that picky about ammo, with 6 10/22's and 11 Marlin 60's under my belt, plus half a dozen other guns of lever or bolt actions (and one slide action winchester).

Most of my 10/22's that I've scoped have shot touching groups at 25yrds with pretty much anything I feed it, including "whatever I've got left", which usually accounts for 500rnds of the last 5rnds of several different boxes/bricks.

Ely match ammo ($4-6 a box) shoots way more accurately than your 10/22 will ever dream of. CCI Minimags will also likely out perform your rifle.

I'm not a big fan of federals, no matter what gun I'm using, I usually get about 1/3 of them as misfires. I've had several squibs with federals too, which is the ONLY rimfire ammo I've ever had that problem with. You'll extreme variation in report from one round to the next, even in their premium ammo. At least that's been my experience.

Your best bet is buy several different brands and try them in you rifle.No two guns will shoot alike.What shoots well in one might be terrible in another. It's a hit and miss thing.

My 10/22 shoots everything good. Well I have done some work to it so I guess that isn't the same thing.

my 10/22 shoots federal highpower hollow points great. i have a 4x tassco mag 22 scope on it. not sure about groups but ill hit a gopher in the head at 50 yards easy. thses shells are the cheapest one i can find, i get 550 for $16CDN.

I've shot thousands of rounds through 10/22's and had only two problems. 1) yellow jackets-the weird shaped bullet doesn't feed well in the auto loader and jams. They are one of the VERY best 22rounds by performance though. 2) when prairie dog hunting or ground squirrel hunting (3-4000 rds/day) any bullets w/ the "black/grey" finish or wax or lube or whatever it is gums up the action pretty bad.
