Red Dot or Crosshairs?

Any thoughts on which way to go. I have a .44 S. Redhawk and would like to put a red dot sight on it but am hearing mixed reviews such as, "youre eye must be perfectly aligned or dot will not be true, and that they dont last long on handguns". Any suggestions. I will be using it for hunting.

RE: Red Dot or Crosshairs?

For hunting, I would go with crosshairs. I have a S&W 22 that I use for squirrel hunting and I initially put a red dot on it. I never felt comfortable with it. Went to a regular scope. Now I can hit 'em in the head pretty much every time.

I also had a 357 with a red dot on it for a while. Sold it, because I couldn't hit anything CONSISTENTLY with it. Could have been me.

I love the crosshairs. It is just what I have grown accostomed to. Maybe you'll be different.

For precision shooting cross hairs, and red dot for not so precision shooting. Good luck.

I have hunted deer for years with a Ruger SRH in 44 mag and 454 . I started using a 2x scope but found that I was having trouble seeing the crosshairs first thing in the AM in the deep side valley I hunt . I now use Millet red dot sights on my 454 and 44 .
No you don't have to be perfict ,just put the dot on the deer and pull the trigger.
The Millit 30 mm red dot sight has over 3000 rnds of 454
Buy a good red dot and it will last . Cheap may = broke
I can recomend the Millet 1" or 30 mm or Lepold Gilmore . I or friends use them on 454s
Yes a scope is a LITTLE more accurate than a red dot but if you can't see the crosshairs you can't shoot and the rest of the time the differance is slight

Well, I guess I'll see for myself. I ordered a UltraDot 1". I have to just give it a shot. I heard that these have the least amount of distortion and hold up to any caliber.

I'll let you know,
Thanks for the replies.

Goodguy,

I should of looked at your website post. I didnt like the holosight because of battery life. I guess they fixed that in their new one.
