300 yard Sight In for a 300 Win Mag

Okay Gentleman,

I planned on Sighting my 300 win mag in at 200 yards dead even this weekend with Federal Premium Vital-shok Barnes X- Triple SHock with 180 grains. I have a range that only has 25, 50 and 100 yard ranges to sight in. I downloaded the Ballistics sheet from Federal Cartridge and to be dead on at 200 yards, I need to be 1.5 inches high at 100.

Now, my Guide wants me to be 300 yards dead acurate, so that I can still be in the ballpark at 500 yards. My question is how high should I be sighting in at 100 yards in order to be dead on at 300 yards?

Thank you for your help?

Kevin Paulson

im going to sound like a know it all [email protected] this is how it should go.....sight your gun in and practice AT the ranges youll be hunting.....no computers going to tell you how your bullets going to act....can come close....but if its off an inch at 100 thats a big miss at 500.........and you didnt practice with your equiptment at 500....but you think you can take an animals life at that range???????do yourself a favor and find a range that goes out to where you need to practice....practice practice practice...why spend the money and everything on the hunt....then the moment of truth comes and your "data" was wrong and you missed by 6 inches.......? really.....do yourself and the game a favor and practice at the ranges youll be hunting......

Okay, Mauser I get your drift. I went Elk Hunting Last year and I put over 100 rounds through my 270 and over 50 through my 300 win mag last year. Both Sighted in to be dead accurate at 200 yards due to the ballistics chart that Federal provided me. I shot both an Elk and a Mule Deer at about 250 yards offhand with one shot shot. The Elk Travelled for a long way on a double lung shot that peirced his shoulder and the Muley dropped like a rock. I understand fully practice practice practice, I have no problem with that but I want to get damn accurate at a range that is fully controlled and then I will take the 300 out to the field and get some shots off at long distance. At $2.20 a round for this ammo, I am not going to waste tons of it.

Secondly, I am hunting ELK here, the heart is the size of a shoebox we are not talking a pinhole size target here... If I am going to even consider a shot at 500 yards we are talking about using a rest and I better have a ton of time on my hands and the conditions had better be damn perfect.

I still need the Ballistics question answered whether I am practicing at a 300 yard range or not so i can tape it to the rifle, and be ready to make an informed decision at any range.

My Barnes manual says ...1.49" high at 100yds; 0 at 200yds; -6.58"at 300yds; -18.93"at 400yds. Soo... dead on at 300yds would be 8.07" high at 100yds. I would sight in 4" high at 100yds, that would put you 4" low at 300yds. You could hold dead on at any range out to 300yds. I have to really question the caliber of guide you have if he wants you shooting 500yds at elk[>:].

I agree with nvmike when he is questioning your guide. No guide should let his hunter shoot at an animal at 500 yds. - even 400 for that matter. The 300 WM is very capable but at that range a lot comes into play. I don't know where you live but the altitude difference may also play a role in trajectory. And what about wind. At that range, a 20 mph crosswind would throw your bullet off considerably (a 180 gr., 30 cal bullet would probably drift about 15" - figuring on about 3" per every 100 yds.). I'm going on a mulie/antelope hunt in October. My outfitter told me to sight in 1 1/2" high at 100 yds. This would be just fine with a standard crosshair scope. I have the Burris Ballistic-plex reticle and I've shot out to 300 yds using it and I am pleased with the results.
I would strongly suggest to your guide that you are not comfortable taking a shot over 300 yds.
As for your 300WM. I would sight-in 3.5" at 100 yds. that would pretty much allow you to hold dead center on an elk's chest out to about 325 yds.
Remember, the closer the better. I hope you shoot a nice bull at 100 yds. Good Luck.

I am going to sight in at 4.5 high at 100 yards and should be good at 300 yards. Thank you all for the help.

Fredrmef - W/ that sight in you'll be alright. Like I said though, POLITELY be carefull w/ this guide, if he tells you to try a shot your not comfortable w/ TELL HIM(dont ask) its to far, no further discussion. For reference, only use 9X on your scope when looking at shots, it'll give you a good idea of the range where 10X 12X ect can be misleading(crank it up for the actual shot if you want though.)I dont like the idea he's talking about 500yd shot w/ people he doesn't know. Good luck w/ the hunt:). Let us know how it goes. With a lttle luck the elk will so close he gets powder burns:D.

Fred, go into google and search for point blank range. This will give you an approximate sight in for a given target size with a cartridge of your selection.
Example: a 10" target using a 300 WM, sight in at X" at 100 yds. Point blank range will be XXX yds. Which means you can hold in the center of the target and the bullet path will not go above or below the target at any range from 0 yds to the PBR given.

welll....... according to a ballistics program I have, to be dead on at 300 yards with a 180 grain bullet from a 300 WM you would need to be 3.97 inches high at 100 yards, But also according to the ballistics program even zeroed at 300 yards puts you 30.65 inches low at 500 yards. these ballistics programs are not entirely accurate but they are pretty close atleast gives a general idea. A few days ago I was shooting with a friend I was shooting a 308 he was shooting a 338 WM with a 210 grain nosler partition we were shooting at target set at 300 yards that day we had a 20 mph crosswind my friend was experiencing about a foot of wind drift with my 308 I was shooting 165 grain BTHP Gamekings and was experiencing slightly less drift but still close to a foot I suppose on a elk size target give or take a foot to the right or left may not keep you from hitting it. I dont know where you are hunting but I know here in arizona the elk are mostly in higher elevation and a 20 mph crosswind is pretty common especially going into fall/winter. According to my ballistics program it show 2 feet of wind drift at 500 yards with a 20 mph crosswind with your 300 WM and a 180 grain bullet. 2 feet could mean a miss or turn a shoulder shot into a gut shot if you are not confident of your marksmanship at that kind of range do yourself and the animal a favor dont risk just wounding it, especially a 500 yard shot is difficult enough if you dont have a fatal shot and the animal begins to run....... shooting a elk running 20 mph at 500 yards is darn near impossible if you do hit it running I would tend to lean towards luck more then skill.
