can you safely use a barrel that is a remington 870 wingmaster on a 870 express magnum?

The only differenance between the Wingmaster and Express is the finnish and type of wood used .

I have done it before. I borrowed a friends rifled Wingmaster barrel to use on my express. I know what your talking about, they sell 870Special, 870 wingmaster, and 870 express, but really don't explain much about them.

I would guess, that yes, you could use the 870 barrel on either the Wingmaster or the Express.

870 Wingmaster - high gloss blued finish, high gloss, high quality wood.
870 Express - matte blued finish (non gloss), satin finish plain wood.

The only problem I see here is putting a Wingmaster bbl for 2 3/4" shells on a Magnum receiver. If both are 3" chambers, no problem. If the Wingmaster is 2 3/4", just be sure you only feed it 2 3/4" shells. Not an inconceivable scenario. I just went and looked at my Wingmaster (2 3/4") versus Express Mag (3") and barrels are identical except for chamber length.

No problem exchanging an 870 Express with an 870 Wingmaster. As mentioned before, the only difference being the finish - matte vs blued. I have done this with several different guns after consulting a gunsmith. The barrels are identical. As a rule though, and like it was already stated, when choosing the length of shells to use, you have to match the shells to the barrel first, then match to the receiver. In other words, a 2 3/4 " barrel on a 3" receiver will still only handle 2 3/4" shells. Similarly, a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver, will only handle 2 3/4 " shells. You always have to use the smallest shells that the barrel and receiver have in common.
