35 Wheelin

My father is contemplated getting rid of his .35 Wheelin (sp?) remington pump.... He asked me today if I would have any use for it (other than just being added to my collection. For those of you who don't know it is a 30-06 necked up to .35.

Do you see any major difference between that and a 30-06 bolt. I currently only hunt deer and smaller, I have a 30-06, would there ever be an instance where I would want the pump/higher knockdown? Does anyone have experience with this gun/caliber?

Thanks!

I have had the Remington pump in quite a few calibers including the 35 Whelen. These rifles function really well and are usually quite accurate as the have a free floated barrel and a rotary locking bolt. The 35 would offer no advantage over the 30-06 for deer and smaller game. However if you upsize the game to Elk Bear and Moose then the 35 Whelen with its heavier bullets may be an advantage. Its a fine caliber with lots of proof in the field over many years. I would certainly add it to my collection if I were a hunger man. I am starting to thin out my collection as the years are starting to cut into my hunting time. I have a few rifles that I will keep for my kids even though at this time they are not really into hunting. I have a long ways to go before I would reach a shortage of guns.;)

I shot my first deer at 20yrds with this cartridge. The recoil was bad for me, but I'm big for a 15 year old:). I won't buy it for deer sized game, but for bigger animals, it's awesome.

The whelen is better suited for larger game and is an exceptionally under rated cartridge. It is extremely versitile and everything from 357 caliber pistol bullets to 300 gr big game bullets can be used.

I would put a peep sight on it, and take it into the woods. Use your bolts in places where long shots will be expected. Can't beat a pump in the woods.
