375 H&H OR RUM?
my brother is starting to look at getting a big caliber rifle as his next purchase. i thought i would start asking the questions now to help him out. he wants a remington 700 action so i was wondering what the major differences are between the h&h and the rum 375 as far as recoil and accuracy? which one would you consider. keep in mind it may be used on a trip to alaska for brown bear some day as well as africa.

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
375 Ultra is a better performer on paper for all counts.
I jumped from a 375HH to 416 Rigby and haven't tried the 375 Ultra. I'm fairly recoil INsensitive; however, as a good rule of thumb if you are moving up from a 375HH, then be sure to buckle your chin strap. More later, EKM |
RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
I am not against all new things but in my opinion it would be hard to beat the old reliable 375 H&H. For the kind of game you are talking about hunting it would do very well. As far as accuracy goes the rifle would be the determing factor rather than the caliber. I just read an artical by Boddington where he reviewed the 375's. Several of them. He likes the added velocity of some of the newer rounds but admits that he could do just fine if limited to the H&H. I could not agree more. For anything the 375 H&H would not handle you would most likely be requred to use a caliber of 40 or more as some countries have a 40 caliber minimum. It would be worth his time to check out some of the countries he may hunt to see what the minimum caliber would be. I would look at the 416 Remington Magnum if he wants to go a little bigger yet. I owned one of those and shot a lot with another. Its a Game stopper yet the recoil while stiff if not terrible. The last thing I shot with mine was a rattle snake. An overkill for sure:D

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
I can't speak about the RUM but, I have owned several .375H&H's and can't imagine needing anything more for this continent.
They have good range and are very accurate. |
RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
I would go for the .375 RUM because I handload. If I did not handload, I would purchase the .375 H&H Mag due to ammunition availability. Good luck.

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
he plans on reloading so thats not a problem. i just thought maybe it had a similar recoil with flatter shooting results. has anyone shot both?

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
There is no magic answer. ALL OTHER THINGS EQUAL, if the same weight bullet flies faster and flatter, then there will be a price to be paid in recoil. Managable perhaps, but still a price to be paid.
One thing to consider, if your 375H&H rifle arrives in Cape Town, RSA and your ammo luggage doesn't, then you WILL be able to easily buy 375HH ammo, not so for the 375 RUM. Third world considerations are seldom top of mind in the NA gun world. EKM |
RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
.300 RUM. Good luck.

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
NO difference in accuracy OR KILLING POWER between them. But the recoil of the H&H is tolerable enough that you can shoot it enough to learn to hit well with it. The Ultra, and the .378 Weatherby, are a different story. I limit MYSELF to no more velocity than produced by the .375 Weatherby.

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
RUM 's IMHO are a joke. Read the reloading forum to see how difficult they are to get to shoot well , that and using ALOT more powder for really minimum gains.
With the added recoil it just isn't practical in my book. |
RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
he has already shot a 375 rum with a brake on it and he never complained about it so i guess it got tamed with the brake on it . the owner of the gun kinda got him thinking of getting one over the H&H but i had no idea of the downsides. I will have to check on the accurate reloader site for some opinions from those who hunt africa with this caliber . thanks for the info im gonna foward this to my brother.

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
Well I use the heck out of my 338 Rum. Dont really know how the other three cals. work.
But I do know that the reason that I chose the 338 RUM over the 375 H&H is that . 1. Compare the ballistics of the two The 338 hits harder than Any of the 375 H&H bullets. 2. Have to compare the muz. vel. between the two. ( Granted the two ARE NOT the same .)But still blowing it out of the water at any distance you want to compare to. 3. I dont have to take the recoil of the 375 calibers. Just something to look at. And please be my guest . You can go to the Rem. web site and compare any of them. hunter338 Aint that ONE funny Joke...:D:D:D |
RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
The 300 UM is a great round for most North American game. If you intend to hunt the big bears, grizz, kodiak or brown, you want the 375 H&H. You'll know what I mean when a grizz appears out of the mist at 50 yards looking at you like a menu at your favorite restaurant. Oh, if your recoil jumpy, stay away from the H&H.

RE: 375 H&H OR RUM?
Never been afraid of recoil. Do have a round for the Big Bears it's called a 378 W. Mag.
I also have a nice 10 guage 3 and 1/2 mag shot gun. Well I guess you could say that I am a little recoil senseitive.:D hunter338 |
