7mm-08
I was just wondering if anyone else shot the 7mm-08. i got a browning micro madalion in that calibre. Is so, have you done any ammo tests for which groups the best, and which brand has a good penetration. can you make a 300 yd shot with factory ammo? i don't think so but would like to hear some comments. im getting it refinished and then puting a leupold on it. so we'll c how it works out.

I can't really help you, but I love my 7mm-08 Browning A-bolt... Good luck in your quest.

RE: 7mm-08
Just like it parent case the 30-06, many good calibers have been develpoed from the 308 case. The 243, 260.7mm-08 and the 308. The 7mm08 is certainly one of the best. It is very capable of 300 Plus yard shots on deer size game in the hands of a good rifleman. Federal loads the Nosler Partition for the 7mm-08 and you would have a hard time improving on that load. If you reload then your options are almost limitless. Good luck I think you will love the combo you have. I have a Savage 110 Scout Rifle in that calibe. It has an excellent peep sight and just a 20 inch barrel. I like the 120 grain Sierra pro-hunter bullet as I reload all my own. For real big game at close range I like the 175 Grain Hornady.

RE: 7mm-08
We have played with the 7mm-08 a bit, and found the Federal stuff shoots great out of a Remington 788. That is also the case with all my guns, whatever the calibre. And don't worry about a 300 yard shot, if you do your part, that cartridge will certainly do it's!

RE: 7mm-08
Grant,
I have the exact same gun. I chose it because, at the time, it was one of the only carbines with a 20" barrel. Rem Model 7 was 18 1/2. Mine is the Micro Medallion which is much more beautiful than what they're making now as the Micro Hunter. I put a Kane gun chap on it and it looks brand new after more than 10 years. It handles like a BB gun but I did put a full size scope on it after getting frustrated with the performance of a compact. Mine always loved the Remington Extended Range 154gr soft points. That's been long out of production though. Maybe a gun show will have a box around. I reload now and am grouping wonderfully with Nosler BT's. If you want to shoot 300 yards please practice. |
RE: 7mm-08
Jamesb - Was that a typo? the 30-06 isnt the parent case of the 7mm-08, or any of the short actions for that matter. Although many of them did come from the 308. 7mm-08 is a GREAT deer varmit caliber.

RE: 7mm-08
Technicaly, NV, any of those cartridges, (.338-06, 8mm-06, .270, 25-06, 6.5-06, .308, 7mm-08, .243 and a few I'm sure I missed) are all derived originally from the good ol' 30-06 case.

RE: 7mm-08
SWEET!!!!!!!!! everyone else was telling me that the caliber had no capabilities over 150-200 yds. im putting a 4-12x40 leupold vxI on it. Hows that sound. id like a slightly bigger scope, but ive herd from people with 10,000 custome guns that leupold is the BEST, the only scope they use, and the only brand that will really group and not move. any thoughts.? my pricerange is about 250-300$
Id like to hear from people that REALLY USE the scope ALOT!!!!!!!!!! and are very experienced. so if u know of a scope, in that price rance, that is bigger that 4-12, and is as good a leupold, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! |
RE: 7mm-08
I hate to burst your bubble but the 30-06 case was derived from the 8x57

RE: 7mm-08
I've been working up a handload for my Browning Micro Hunter 7-08. Don't dhoot factory stuff. I think I found one that is shooting pretty good. Using 42 gr. of IMR4064 behind a Hornady 139 gr BTSP. My accuracy improved alot by switching from CCI Large rifle primers to Rem. large rifle magnum primers. I guess the 'hotter' Remingtons are giving me a more uniform powder ignition.
If your going after deer/black bear sized game, I would recommend Federal Premium in 139 to 150 gr range. |
RE: 7mm-08
Grant,
The Browning Micro Medallion is a carbine short barrel. Velocity and energy over 250 yards drops alot. Also putting a big scope like that on it ruins the balance advantages of the handy feel of the gun. Stick with a scope around 14 ounces. |
RE: 7mm-08
Yea i know! that really sucks!!! is there a way u can get ur barrel extended?
|
RE: 7mm-08
I give up. The Browning Micro Medallion is a fantastic whitetail hunting rig for woods hunting and snap shots and even up to 250 yards in open country. It's not a long range sniper rifle. Those are two different guns both of which will put down a deer with different equipment and techniques. I'd say if you're not happy trade it for a 7 mag with 26" barrel with scope pushing the weight over 9 pounds for steady long range holds. Get a bipod while you're at it and get it up over 11 pounds for shots to 400 yards.
