.22 mag or .17 HMR
I was wondering what one would work best on squirrels, rabbits, and fox. I dont want to blow the crap out of squirrels and rabbits.....just wanting to know what one you guys liked

RE: .22 mag or .17 HMR
I like the old 22 LR. The 22 mag just makes more noise. And the 17 is pretty destructive. The LR works just fine. Dead is dead, put the bullet in the right spot. If you have your heart set on one of these though, the mag would be a better choice of the two. IMHO

RE: .22 mag or .17 HMR
would the .22 LR be enough to kill fox? Other than that I agree with longrifle, and you can shoot the heck out of it for a very small amount of money.

A 22 lr would kill a fox, range would be limited. Id go for the 17 hmr, personal prefrence. Use the cci's if you cant make headshots otherwise the hornadys will blow it to crap. Id get a shotgun for those rabbits.

RE: .22 mag or .17 HMR
I was reading somewhere the other day about a new load for the 17 HMR. It uses a bullet designed for small game instead of the now available bullets designed for rapid expansion on varmints. I am trying to find out what they are and maybe pick some up.

Frizzellr
from my understanding the new load concist of a 20gr bullet its loaded by cci and is disined fro small game and its suposidly disined where there will be less meat dammage. on the 17 vs 22 mag. i like the 22 mag the best. |
RE: .22 mag or .17 HMR
I'd pick the little Hornet and load my own.:D

RE: .22 mag or .17 HMR
i got the Ruger 77/22 Mag. and i love the thing, but honestly like treedog said go for the head shot with either the MAG or the .17HMR. but i know that a LR aint what you want, cuz well "MORE POWER" (hard to grunt over the internet)lol i hit a squirrel in the neck with the Winchester round when the 77/22 was right out of the box (very accutite out of the box gun), and took it's head and one shoulder off, so they aint a meat saving gun/round if you shoot for the body. i switched to CCI's TNT rounds. they're very accurite, and not as damaging. and trust me they work for rabbit to, i've gott'n a couple that kinda lost their thoughts. you just gotta see 'em before they run, or wait till they stop and then take the head shot. good luck with the desition

I think the newest 17HM2 would be better for squirrels!
