RE: 17 hmr which gun?
Both are very accurate. I was going to get Marlin myself (liked there new trigger), but ran into a Ruger at a pawn shop I couldn't pass up. Ruger also very accurate.

RE: 17 hmr which gun?
I have the Savage 17 hmr 93R17 FVSS and it’s a nice little gun. The Marlin has a 7 shot clip and has a 22” long barrel compared to the 21” long barrel and 5 shot clip from the Savage. I had decided to go with the Savage over the Marlin because of the price. The Savage was a little less in price. They are both nice rifles.
I can’t comment on the accuracy of the rifle because I haven’t brought it to the range yet but I have heard some good reports on the Savage. I purchase an extra clip for my rifle and they told me it’s the same clip as the Savage 22 mag. , not that it’s a big deal. I would suggest to get a higher power scope for either rifles to take full advantage of the 17 hmr. ;) |
RE: 17 hmr which gun?
I want a silver scope and up here where i live there isnt much selection. I'm thinking of getting a simmons 3-9 power scope. i dont want to spend any more then $140CAN on it. Is this a good scope? i think it will be plenty for shooting gophers at 100 yards

RE: 17 hmr which gun?
Gopher slayer, I think the 3-9 would work good up to 100 yards but take a look at the Bushnell Trophy 3-9. I had originally bought this scope in a silver finish and it looked real good on the rifle. This scope is very nice and clear. I was very impressed with this scope but I ended up getting the Bushnell Trophy 6-18 in black finish because I wanted more power. The Bushnell Trophy sells for about $169.00 here in town. I think the Bushnell is a better quality scope then the Simmons. Good luck.....;)

Ive been reading about how both triggers arent that great. Dose marlins new trigger correct the problem?

RE: 17 hmr which gun?
I couldn’t tell you on the trigger problem. I’m not sure and as I mentioned I haven’t shot the my Savage yet. One thing I had wanted to mention was that I was told that the Savage has a better base for mounting a scope. I can’t remember why and not sure if the guy at the store was full of you know what , but I didn’t have any problems mounting my scope with a set of Millett Weaver style Nickel rings..
I also wanted to mention that I have a Simmons Aetec scope and find that the Bushnell Trophy scope to be much clearer then my Simmons. I thought I would just add this information between the Bushnell and the Simmons to help you decide but if you can, you should really look at them at the store. |
RE: 17 hmr which gun?
I bought the Savage 93R17 FVSS because I like synthetic stocks (I beat the snot out of my guns in the woods). The gun shoots 1/2-3/4 inch groups every time when I am shooting the 17 grain Hornady VMax loads. I got the 4.5x14x40AO Simmons ATV scope, you can buy from www.natchezss.com for about $80 shipped. So far I love the setup.
Regarding the triggers, I did a trigger job on mine a week ago. It is now literally a match grade trigger. No creep, and 2lbs a pull. It is just as crisp as any aftermarket trigger I have seen or used. There is a how to on this trigger job here........ http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...ad.php?t=46774 One thing I did differently, is instead of replacing the trigger spring, I used the stock one, but mashed it a bit with a pair of pliers so that it wasn't so stiff. I couldn't find a pen spring that fit the hole that was strong enough to return the trigger assembly to it's proper position every time. You should have seen the look on my girlfriends face when she came home and I was sitting there with a perfectly good brand new gun, and 2 dozen pens all taken apart on the living room floor.......:D Last weekend before the trigger job, I was able to hit a quarter 8 times out of ten at 100 yards, and the misses were my fault, not the guns. |
RE: 17 hmr which gun?
I'd get the Marlin. I sell both and personally have both, all the tweaking in the world isn't gonna give the Savage a T900 trigger.
