What did your dad hunt with?
The range of calibers and quality of optics these days is amazing. So what did your dad hunt with? Easy on my end; the old Rem 12 gauge auto! He carried shot and slugs; not much worried about anything over 40 yards. Kicked like a mule, too!
We had this old Savage 22 rifle that Dad said he burnt out the bore long ago with La Palma (?) ammo, which I think was corrosive. It had an ancient, skinny little 2x weaver scope. But I would wait until night as a kid and take that out when my eyes got used to the dark in the midwest and pop rabbits. Youngsters that argue the itsy-bitsy pros & cons of light gathering in today's optics need to take a look at the old stuff! |
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
He did not hunt ,he had a Win 97 to shoot starlings in the tree and a Win 62A for coon and rats in the barn . When I wanted to start hunting he handed the guns to me and said have fun.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
For years (since he bought it new at age 16) my dad's primary hunting gun was his Remington 870 Wingmaster 20 gauge shotgun. Used it for everything from squirrels to deer. It's also the gun I learned to shoot on, along with an ancient Mossberg .22 semi-auto (the "Jam-O-Matic"). He still has that gun, and it'll be passed on to me when he's gone, and as long as gun-grabbing retards like Kerry don't get elected too often, my son will get it when I'm pushing up daisies.
Later he got into muzzleloading for deer, and ended up with a handy little T/C White Mtn. carbine that has killed many deer. It's the smallest and most portable ML I've ever seen (that wasn't a pistol), and while its short (for a ML) 22" bbl won't set any velocity records, it'll still do a number on a deer inside 100 yards. RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad hunted with the old Eddiestone 30-06. He bought it at an army surplus store for 15.00. He left the old military peep sight on it for sights. He didn't hunt much as work always came first. He was not the best shot with a rifle but he could shoot a pistol with the best of them. I learned to shoot high power rifles with that old eddiestone. Shot quite a few deer with it as well.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My father is an animal lover, never could shoot one. He bought me my first gun (non-pellet gun) when I was 25, b/c he said that he wanted to be the one that gave me that even though he did not hunt, and that he regretted that he did not let me pursue it at an earlier age. I of course accepted that Browning .270.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad always carried his 12ga Ithaca model 37 Deerslayer. No scope. I always loved the look of that gun. He took a few deer w/ it before he stopped hunting.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My Dad was always a shotgun guy. Carried a pre-WWII Browning A5 16ga and killed just about any game in Md. with the thing. In the 1960s, when white tail deer were really beginning to make a comeback, he bought a British .303 surplus rifle for $11 and chopped some wood off to "lighten it up". He killed some deer with that rifle. No scope. He also continued to kill deer with the Browning shotgun, until he quit hunting in the 1980s, well into his 70s.
He had been a subsistance hunter as a boy and never viewed firearms as I do. A firearm was no different then a hammer or saw. Just a tool. He would've never dreamed of putting any sort of money into a battery of firearms to go out of state to hunt. Just was not in his scheme of things. I still have my grand dad's Remington Model 11, in 20ga with Poly-Choke. Those guys loved the Poly-Choke. Grand dad never hunted with any other gun that I know of. |
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
He used a savage 99 in 308 and a sporterized 06 mauser action from the war surplus.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad has had many guns over the years. The first was an old hammer double 12 ga. that quit fireing on both bbls and my grandfather gave up on it. My dad at about age 9, tore it apart, made the missing parts and got one bbl to fire, and used it for many years that way. My brother still has it today.
In modern days, he used an old Remington double bbl 12 guage that he got durning WWII. All of us kids grew up useing it as we got old enough, and i still have it today. I restocked it in some very nice Claro Walnut, and reblued it too, as it was beat up with the stock broken. The last (4) phesants i shot with it was back to back doubles about 15 minutes apart. Dad shot several deer with it long ago too, as did us kids. Around that same time, he had a single bbl 12 ga, with interchangable 30-30 bbl.. (Savage??) That 30-30 was super accurate, and dad won a fair bit of money betting on his shooting abilities with it! One of my brothers ended up with it, and sold it!!!!!!!!! He also bought a Savage 12 ga. semi auto, copy of the Browing auto 5, and shot that a lot. My brother with the hammer double still has that shotgun too. Dad bought a Remington semi auto 16 ga. when i was a small kid, and man he sure shot a lot of ducks and phesants with it!!! I've seen him make many doubles and some tripples with it on phesants. I still have it, and dad and i both shoot it yet today. One rifle he shot a "truck load" of deer with (i'm NOT exaggerating) was an old Remington semi auto in 35 Rem. cal.. Man he sure shot a LOT of deer with that gun!! My oldest brother ended up with it, and one day traded if off! :>( Dad moved from the 35 Rem. to a Remington 742 in 30-06, and he never looked back!!! He shot even more deer with this rifle than he did with the 35!!! He also shot moose and blk. bear with his old 06.. My same brother that ended up with the 35, also ended up with the 742, and he also traded that one off!!!!!! One last gun that sticks out in my mind is, a Remington 788 in .243 my mom and i bought for dad one year for Christmas. Dad shot a LOT of deer with it here on the farm. I have it now, and we both still shoot it. Honorable mentions, would be a JC Higgins semi auto 22 rimfire, an Anschultz bolt action in 22 WRM, and a Ruger 10-22 rimfire. He has had a LOT of other guns over the years too, but these are the ones that stand out in my mind. Dad turned 91 in Feb., and he went down to get a doe tag a few days ago. He plans to be out deer hunting again this fall! :>) BTW, of all the cals. my dad has owned and used over the years includeing many magnums, he proclaims the 30-06 to be the "best all around cal. even made, and to have all the "power" anyone would ever need for any animials the size of a moose on down, and he has shot many a game animial in his more than 80 years of hunting to come to this conclusion!!!! RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My pop used a winchester 12 gauge for all bird hunting and a 30-30 for most deer except when hunting out west. He used a 30-06 then.
He's got quite a collection of guns but those are the only ones he regularly used. |
RE: What did your dad hunt with?

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad didnt hunt but my grandpa used and sold guns all the time. But the main guns he has been using the past 20 years is a winchester auto 12 he has killed a pile of ducks rabbits and about 15 deer with it. A savage 99 in .303 Savage, a M-92 Winchester .25-20 an Iver Johnson 12 Ga single shot and a Mossberg .22 LR with a tube feed.
|
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
Rem. 721 in .270. Then I used it until I bought my own...a model 99 .300 Savage.
|
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad hunted deer one time with this single shot .30-06 of my grand-dads, my old man was mostly a wing shooter, he guided hunts at a few of the ranches around here, he used an Iver Johnson Champion single shot .410. He also was an avid coon hunter (still is), he's used Marlin semiauto .22's since he started shooting, a Marlin 99M-1 (looks like a mini M-1Carbine), a 66 (the model 60 of current manufacture plus 1 rnd more capacity), and now a Marlin 60 stainless that I bought him two years ago for christmas. The .410 is pretty much the only gun I hunt with for upland game and dove and I still shoot the 99M-1 more than any of my other rimfire rifles.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
Dad didn't start hunting deer until later because there wasn't many here in Ky back then. The first rifle I remember him deer hunting with was a Parker-Hale 30-06. He used a Riverside Arms 16ga single barrel for rabbit, quail, squirrel and pretty much everything else back in his younger days.
|
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad used to talk of an old 30-40 krag he had for his first hunting rifle. I've always known him to use a Rem 700 .308, and a few years with a Ruger No.1 in 6mm Remington.
I now use the .308 since he gave up hunting several years ago. |
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
Winchester rifle in 30-06 for whitetail
Western Auto .22 for rabbit and tree rats |
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
Pop used to hunt with a 30-40 Krag in an old springfield, in fact he still has the gun. Later he graduated to a 30-30 Marlin then his famous 760 Fieldmaster in 30-06. Those guns made for alot of memories......

RE: What DOES your dad hunt with?
Old:
Remington 7mmMag Ithaca Model 28 sxs New: Remington 7mm-08 870 Xpress Magnum I recently took ownership of my uncles Rem 742 when he passed. |
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad had a few guns buthe really only hunted with a Springfield 1903-A3 that was sporterized. It wasn't real accurate because it had only two rifle grooves. His other gun was an Ithaca Model 37 witch he liked because he is left handed and it is bottom eject.
|
RE: What did your dad hunt with?
My dad didn't hunt. However, when I was 10 or 11, my grandfather passed away and my dad inherited his hunting club membership. He started going to camp for the social aspect of it and he would take me out to the woods in the morning with my granddad's old Mauser (which I now own). We didn't have a clue how to hunt, but it was fun. Eventually, by listening to experienced hunters and some reading, I got to be pretty good at hunting. My dad never took it up, though, but I'm so grateful to him for taking me.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
Yeah, I have a smith Corona 03A3 as well, but with a 2-groove barrel on it. The dang thing is an ugly beat up gun, but is a tack driver.

RE: What did your dad hunt with?
Arisaka type 38 in 6.5 x 50. Peep sight and deadly accurate. He always just referred to it as "the Jap".
