Sporting Clays - what gun?

I have done a lot of skeet shooting over the years and have always done well with an 870 wingmaster. Some friends of mine are getting into sporting clays and I'm thinking about giving it a try. However, they are saying that a pump gun just won't do. They say I need an auto or o/u. Is anybody using a pump for this type shooting. Also, for under $600 what would be the best gun for this type of shooting. I beleive a Rem 11-87 would be nice, but I don't know if I want to shell out any dough right now.
Thanks

Try it for yourself and see if it works for you. Your buddy may not be able to do it with a pump but if a pump is what you're used to then you might even do better than your buddy. Remember that a pump can almost shoot a second just as fast as an automatic and if that is what you're comfortable with then you'll do okay.

I ran into the exact same thing years ago, when I first started shooting clays. Stick with the 870 until you start losing birds because of it, or until you can afford another gun. It will do for now, if you are an experienced pump shooter (and I figure you are) you can shoot just about as fast as anything out there. But, an auto will have the advantage of lower felt recoil, and possibly a little quicker recovery, the O/U only has the advantage of shooting two different chokes for long and short bird stands. My advice is to save up and get you a Beretta 391, you'll love the gun, but shoot what you have for now.

I looked at some nice 11-87's last night. I found one I really liked and made him an offer of $500. He wanted $600. He's thinking about it. I really liked the feel of this gun. It seemed to fit me. Thnaks for the responses.

Update...I bought the 11-87 I made an offer on. The fellow took $500. It is really sweet. Thanks again for the responses.
