180 grain nostler-deer overkill?
I plan on shooting 180 grain nos.partitions out my 30.06 for deer and elk. So do you think this is too powerful a load for whitetail? I worry about good bullet expansion on such a thin skinned animal.

Greets,
Well I am not very in the know on the subject, I always figured a bullet is good if it efficiently kills the game. That one will do it nicely, and probably wont do a whole lot more damage to the meat than the one I will be using, the partition in 165 gr. I chose that one simply for the flatter trajectory at range.
I have in the past used bullets as big as 200 gr on deer, but that was because i couldnt find a smaller one in that cal, and it did do excessive damage, but I got the deer!
Just my uneducated opinion!

I consistantly use 300 grain JHP round with my 45-70 for deer and they are a most efficient killer of deer. Winchester markets a nosler partition version and although I have not hunted deer with it I wouldn't hesitate to if I had it.

I'm shooting the 180 grain Partition in my .30-06. I tried 165 and 150 grainers also, but the 180s shot the best. As far as trajectory, the 180 is within 1/2 an inch out to 300 yards vs. the 150, so not much difference there.
I believe the 150 might open a little easier and result in more devistating, drop-on-the-spot kills with broadside shots, but the 180 will knock 'em down, sho-enuff.
Hunting is a right, treat it like a priviledge - respect nature

I too use .30-06 spng on whitetails. You absolutely do not need that heavy of bullet to kill a whitey. I know a lot of people do use 180 partitions, but you don't need it, I wouldn't even use 150 partitions. I use 150 Win supreme balistic silvertips, only once have I not had it drop the deer on the spot. She was too close I think, the bullet blew up, I never found any blood trail, but a buddy that hunts a half mile from where I do said he saw, and tagged a doe that had a huge hole in her chest about 5 minutes after I would have shot. Pissed me off but I let him keep the deer. Just for more accuracy in higher velocity, I'd go with 150 grs, and either softpoints or power points. If you just want one shell to do it all, the 180 partition will do it for sure, it's just a little overkill on light game like whiteys.

It is a good elk bullet and will kill deer but they may run farther than normal after being hit. The 180 partition holds together a little too well for a deer bullet resulting in less damage to the animal and kills that are not quite as quick as with other bullets.
