.22 barrel life?
how many rounds do you think you can put through a .22? my ruger 10/22 has had around 20,000 so far. i shoot 500-1000 at a time. what happens when the barrel starts to go? is it not able to hold groups anymore?

RE: .22 barrel life?
It depends on alot of things One of my 10/22's is at least 15yrs old and more than 20000 rounds shot I clean it well to keep barrel from fouling with lead and it still shoots 1/2inch at 50yds

RE: .22 barrel life?
when your barrel starts to go you lose accurracy and she'll start to throw some shots way off, it gets worse with the more you fire the rifle over time and will only get better by replaceing the barrel.

RE: .22 barrel life?
Its difficult to wear out a barrel shooting lead bullets, as long as it is maintained regularly.

RE: .22 barrel life?
assuming your using lead bullets

No , im not. I prefer the Copper bullets. like i said i shoot 500-1000 at a time and lead makes it a real pain in the ass to clean. plus it will jam more often with lead. i figure i shoot 10,000 per year and just wonder how long it will last. |

RE: .22 barrel life?
Those copper bullets have only a thin plating of copper on them. Not enough to cause a noticable amount of wear. As it's been said a properly maintained .22lr barrel will last a LONG time. The most harm that is done to them is over-cleaning with cheap aluminum rods.

RE: .22 barrel life?
Big Ed is right.... I don't think you could EVER wear out a 22 barrel by shooting it.... but you can ruin one in a few days by "sawing" an aluminum cleaning rod back and forth in it... use a quality steel rod with a bore guide, clean it gently and shoot it for several lifetimes....

RE: .22 barrel life?
It's been fun trying to wear out the barrel of my Brno!

RE: .22 barrel life?
I also agree with Big Ed and Hornetguy Treat your 22's ( Loveingly )and you will not wear the barrel out ever. I was once told that you can wear out the Barrel on some Hi Power rifles within 2000 rounds especially the hotter ( faster ) ones. I was also told about the alum rod thing years ago but I cant seem to remember the reason you should not use the alum rod, is it " chamber abuse and corrosion ??

RE: .22 barrel life?
I have my grandfathers savage pump 22. It was the first gun he ever bought. It has gone thru 4 generation now including my 3 kids. I have a 5 yr old grandaughter that will start shooting it in another year or two.I would guess it had over a 100,000 rounds thru it and it still shoots great.
My son and i have 10/33 that have 20,000 rounds thru them also. |
RE: .22 barrel life?
I've got a Marlin Model 99 M-1 (looks like a baby m-1 carbine, it's so cool <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> ). It was my old man's, he got it when he was about 11, claims to have put over 30,000 through it himself, over 5,000 ofwhich were birdshot. I've had it for about 4 yrs now, and have put 13,878 rounds through it (no kidding, I'm counting!!) The rifling is showing some wear compared to my new Marlin Model 60, but it still has great lands and grooves, and it still holds great groups. Only problem I have with it, my old man lost the rear sight when he took it off to scope it, I use it for coon hunting, so a scope won't do any good, and the front sight juat recently fell off, the allen screw came loose, and I haven't put it back on, so it's kinda difficult to hit a rabbit with out past 80 yrds, but I love it just the same.
GOTTA LOVE THAT MARLIN MAGIC!!!! |
