hunting rifle
I would like to know if anyone on here has tried using an SKS on deer or hog? I have one that i've had a number of modifications done to it. One is it is now a detatchable magazine and I have a 5 rounder for. I live in florida and I think it would be a good gun for here. I'm new to hunting, and I would just like your input. Thanks

RE: hunting rifle
mine is a yugo 7.62x39. Matte chrome finish, polymer stock, fiber optic sights, removed bayo and grenade launcher, cogan compensator, triger job and hard chromed all internal parts, modified magazine so its removable. shoots sweet. can't wait to try it out. I think for Florida deer it should be ok. don't know about hogs

RE: hunting rifle
If you use good ammo you should have no problem if you stay under 150 yards. Do not use the cheap military surplus or Russian consumer ammo on deer. Enjoy!

RE: hunting rifle
The SKS is what a lot of the farmers use on hogs down here in Texas. It stays in the tractor and you don't have to worry about banging it up.

RE: hunting rifle
I used mine one time to deer hunt with, i was using 123 gr. Federal Hydra Shocks. From what i have heard it is comparable to the 30-30 as far as energy. I shot one nice buck with it, i found alot of blood and followed the trail for at least 200 + yards and never recovered the buck. I think i may have gotten a bad hit on him, but he bleed alot. The blood trail ended in the middle of a corn field on the neighbors property so im thinking they got to him before i could. I let a friend borrow it and he shot a nice ten point which ran over the next small ridge and he heard it crash. When he got about 40 yards from it, the deer jumped up and ran and he heard another shot as it disappered over the hill. He was disappointed and so was I. I havent had good luck with my SKS and will probably not hunt with it again, but that may have just been me. Im sure it has taken several deer at short ranges, but i dont much care for it as a deer rifle.
