Full length bedding a whippy barrel?
 

Seems like alot of you guys are interested in the 300 RUM. I have a 70 Classic Stainless with the Express action. I love the gun. Have a laminated thumbhole stock, bedded with free floated barrel. Problem is the thing is very picky, putting two fairly close with some loads and pulling the third out.
I know this case burns alot of powder. Barrel seems small on this gun. Smaller than the Remington. Tried pressure at barrel tip with a little improvement.

Do you any of you think full length bedding of the barrel will help since it is a little on the thin side. I let the barrel cool between shots. Can hunt with it the way it is but would like a little tigher groups. Thanks

It may, or it may not. I had a 700 stainless first. I had to shoot it 2 shots, and let it cool for 10 min. No more no less. This gun actually shoot real well for its size but rough barrel. Copper fouling was horrible. I then thought i had to have this heavy barreled tactical PSS. Well, I had to sell the other one to get it. Big mistake, this gun was used and barrel burnt out. I had it rebarreled, and rebuilt. Still very heavy gun. The heavy barrel takes out some of the pickiness.

What made the first gun a shooter was, I had it pillar bedded and a target crown put on. I also got a limb saver recoil pad. But it was free floated too.

absolutely anything can happen.....full length bedding.....front pressure point.....however my experience has been for free floating barrels and thin barrels such as the Winchester featherweight included.

I free float the barrels and then use reloading techniques to achieve accuracy.

If I can't make the gun shoot well this way I trade it off. Only one so far was a M-70 .300 H&H that I couldn't get to shoot under 2 1/2" All others would eventually shoot good enough to use as a hunting rifle.

Is the barrel free floated back to the recoil lug?

Almost, maybe a little in front of it but probably could use a little more anyway.

I would bed the first 3 inches of the barrel(barrel shank) first and then try that. I am betting that will do it. I had the same gun in 7 Rem mag and yes the barrel tip is not thick probably .600 or so but the rest of the contour is hefty.

Hit the jackpot today, tried powder with a faster burning rate. Stacked em, I'm talking about over the course of several different loads. Acted like a totally different rifle. Thanks for the comments.

I noticed on some of the published tests, that the pressure spike as the bullet leaves the barrel of this caliber can be almost as high as when the bullet starts when using slow powder like the RL25, and Retumbo, and H870. But that pressure spike is smaller and more predictable when using IMR4350, and IMR7878, and even RL22. I have seen simular results you see, but lose alot of velocity. I was getting almost 3400fps with 180gr nosler partition with RL25, but only got accuracy with 88gr RL22 and at less than 3100fps. Having a heavy barrel on my gun helps this whip.

If people would start loading with faster powder, I bet alot of this finickyness would go away. But then we might as well just shoot a 300win mag.

You may be on to something. I was suprised at my velocity which was just under 3400 with 90 gr of RL22. Sorry for the digression here in the gun section.
