if you like the idea of a lever gun try to find a Savage 99. From what you say, I think you woould like the 250savage caliber or 308. Browning makes some excellent lever actions in modern calibers also. The best calibers for your purposes would be 243,6mm,250savage,257roberts,260rem,7mm-08,308. all kick lightly and are suitable for deer.

I see alot of people suggesting 270, you already know how they kick, stay w/ a SHORT action caliber for now. It has to do w/ the overall cartridge LENGTH, which holds less powder. Less powder means less recoil. less recoil=more shooting=better marksmanship.When you go to buy a gun if the person selling them doesnt know a short action from a long action, go somewhere else.
