Rust prevention!?!?!?!?

I'm wondering where is the best place to store your firearms? In a closet leaning up against the wall? In your carrying case with one of the foamies taken out!?!?!? How well will a thin layer of oil protect the gun? Should they be kept in a warm place or a cool spot, up high down low? Mabey I'm paranoid, But I got 2 brand-new guns this last year, one stainless/synthetic and the other blued/oil base stock and I worry about them. It seem we have the worst house to store guns in, theres water everywhere, any suggestion on any good oils or products to protect guns would awsome thanks.....[:o]

GorV,

I use Birchwood Casey rust preventive spray. At my house it seems any firearm stored in a foam type case will rust in a few weeks. So I store them in the gun safe and cabinet with those big desicant packs. Always wipe the fingerprints off or they will rust for sure.

I agree with the above poster. Warm and dry is what you want for storage. Some guns safes/cabinets come with an inside plug for a light bulb to help de-humidify the safe. Birchwood Casey, Hoppes, and Breakfree all make good quality rust preventatives.

I really like Birchwood Casey Sheath and I also use RemOil. If you bring guns in from the cold, take them out of the case and let them lean against a wall overnight so that all of the condensed moisture can dry off before you wipe the metal down. Do not store them in cases- its best to store guns where they are exposed to ambient air conditions. I keep mine in a wooden cabinet and a few in my basement workshop- both areas can get somewhat damp at times, but I've never had any rust- well except on a POS Rem 597.

in conditions like you're listing I'd go with a muslin sheath/case treated with oil. you want to keep the moisture away from the steel And the stock!

Gorv,

Another thing I do to prevent rust is to oil all the guns down and use Birchwood Casey rust preventive spray about every other month or so. Especially in early spring.

Someone here suggested to me the goldenrod and I love it. Before that I used to take all the guns out of the safe once a month and Remoil them. Now it's been almost 6 months since I've done that and all are fine. If you don't have a cabinet or safe, then I'd oil them, and check them every month or so.

The other option if they are going to be stored a lot, and used a little is to cosmoline them. It's a thick paste like grease that will seal out the moisture, but it's a mess to put on and take off.
