I like the Model Seven the way it was. Walnut stock, 18 1/2 " barrel and effective, low recoil calibers.

The walnut stock has been dropped, barrel length extended to 20", then 22" for magnums. Seems like the original concept has been lost.

I'm going to find a good used 308 in walnut, 18 1/2" barrel without the bolt lock before they're all beat to hell.

i have a model seven in 6mm rem. i like the 18 1/2 " barrel. but i did put it on a synthetic stock. i still have the walnut, but the syn. takes abuse better. i also have a ss in 308 20" barrel . i like the 20 " barrel it doesnt bother it a bit . and as far as the magnums , i wouldnt mind having one (without the clinton key) , but the 308 has a nice punch i can only imagine the magnums. the only thing i'm mad about on the seven right now is the clinton key.

I own four Model Sevens,1-20" barrel(SS) and 3-18.5" barrels. Remington should of let the 7 alone,I agree with you...why mess with a good thing...

Jeez, they seem to screw up every good thing they have going for them. Pretty soon they'll drop production of 700s altogether in favor of pushing 710s.

I own an 18.5 inch barrel model 7 in 7mm-08 and really like it's light weight and short length. It shoots good and is easy and convenient to carry when I walk through the woods during the off season. I agree with you, wish they would leave a good thing alone. It seems that Remington has to keep changing things around in order to generate new gun sales. Newer isn't always better though.

i've got a model 7 in .260 rem. with the 18 1/2" barrel and the walnut stock, and i like it the way it was, as for the new version, i also like it the stainless synthetic / laminated versions are improvements for weather resistance and accurracy, but i also feel they should have left the original version for those that prefer it.

As far as the barrel length goes, the 20" was increased to 22" for the Short Action Mags. They need more barrel length to burn up all the powder that's in the case.

Don't know why they went from 18 1/2" to 20". The shorter barrel is what they put on their carbine length 7400s so seems like there should be some commonality there.

I've read that the Model Seven balances better with the 20" barrel but I still like the 18 1/2". Mine is chambered in 7mm 08 and it's a joy to hunt and shoot with.
