.223 all the way, shells are very cheap. Id look at a NEF single shot or a Savage both have good prices.

NEF stands for New England Firearms. To the best of my knowledge they make only single shot rifles and shotguns. Very inexpensive but very reliable.

For what you're looking for, go with a Savage model 110 in .223. Bolt action that is a tack driver and the cost is unbeatable.

If you want a semi-auto, you're probably gonna have to look at AR-15's and those are starting at around $800.00.

Another good one is Ruger, but check out the Savage like I mentioned earlier. You won't be sorry for what you want that gun for.

Suppossedly, Savage has the most accurate barrel from the factory, bar none. Better than a Remington. One day, when you have a few more dollars, get a quality after market trigger for your savage and your gun will be complete!

A friend of mine does own a semi auto Ruger mini-15 or 30. I forget which is 7.62 x 39 and which is .223. Anyway he owns the .223 version. He added a lot of accessories and really likes it.

I have an NEF 223. It's a good gun. That said, if I had it to do over again...I'd get the savage.
