im 17 and havent hunted b4, but the 223 is the m16 round, and would placement of the shot be more than the size of the bullet? a 22lr thru the eye would kill bout any thing would it, i have even heard of russins making a .22cal SNIPER rifle, (the 22 cal for the sniper works at short rang and isnt to loud and wilnt kick up all the dead leaves in a 10foot area, and a well place shot would do it) but my point is, that a 223 put in the right place would kiss a deer, but if u miss, well bad...where as with a larger bullet u might have a better chance of killing it with a shot just a little off, but then again im 17 and not a hunter, so there is a good chance im wrong....i hope i helped and not just sounded stupid

I like deer meat too much to watch it run off so I've pretty much stuck with my 7mm rem mag. Some say (Chuck Hawks) the 7 mag is "too much" gun, whatever that means. Shoot, I've even heard of the brothers in South Houston sittin' up in trees along side the river bank shootin' deer with chrome plated .38's! There's a million half baked stories out there and most would agree just as I do that there has to be a minimum caliber involved here.

A .223 IN 72 GRAIN IS MORE THEN ENOUGH FOR DEER.....BOILOGISTS HAVE STATED THAT ANY MORE THEN 1200 FT/LBS IS ENOUGH

Well, if you're talking about 1200ft-lbs at impact, then your 72gr bullet is only good if you shoot the deer at less than 5 yards or so. A 75gr bullet at 2700fps (this is the max listed velocity for .223Rem for 75 grain bullets in my Hornady 6th edition manual) has 1,214ft-lbs of energy AT THE MUZZLE. Given that a .224cal spitzer point boattail bullet at 75grains has a BC of roughly .400, by the time that bullet reaches 10 yards from the muzzle the energy has dropped to 1,189ft-lbs. At 100 yards the energy is down to 1,019ft-lbs.

A .243Win with a 100gr bullet will easily reach a MV of 2,900fps in standard length barrels. This yeilds a muzzle energy of 1,867ft-lbs. At 220 yards the 6mm bullets still (at a BC of .355) retains 1,216ft-lbs of energy, matching the energy of the best the .223 has to offer at its muzzle.

How can you have more than enough bullet to kill a deer when you are talking about anything under 45 caliber? Ever kill a deer too dead? Didn't think so.

Those are good rules, one shot and ethically! Stick to those rules, and you won't be using any .22's!

Therein lies the problem. I used to live in the middle of a hunting club and had to go out and find wounded deer. I saw alot of deer wasted by marginal shots with 223's, 22-250's and 30-30's.
