Daisy "Red rider" is a pretty good cheaper BB gun that works well. At age 12 he/she may be wishing for something more powerfull, so the best way around that is, for you to buy (2) BB guns, and go shooting with him/her.

That's what i do, and it's a good way to spend some quality time with your kid.

I agree the Daisy red rider is the best bb on the market for the $25 price tag.

The red rider is about the cheapest but you and him would be much happier with a slightly more powerful bb gun. One that he could use pellets and actually hit a can with at 10 yards. The red rider's are not exactly tack drivers.

Something like the single pump Grizzly. It costs a little more but it will be worth the extra ten of fifteen dollars.

It'll cost a few more bucks, but I can recommend the Crossman 760 or 664 Series of rifles. The are pretty darn accurate & east to shoot - great for a beginner. They shoot either BBs or pellets, so they're economical too. :)

And once he gets good, he'll be wanting one of these:

I'd with a crossman 2100classic its a more expensive air rifle which runs around $50 but the results wont let u down. It kills rabbits and birds and chipmunks with ease. Accurate enough 2 hit a pop can at 30yds with open sights. I love mine

When I was about 11 my dad would not buy me a bb gun. When I bugged him enough he told me to get something more accurate and a bit more powerful. My friend had a Sheridan air rifle that shot pellets(single shot) that you could pump up to 15 times for max power on each shot. My dad was impressed with this gun so he bought me one, stating that "you'll get tired of pumping and eventually learn to make the first shot count." That was 34 years ago and I still own that air rifle and it still shoots great! The only work I did to it was refinish the stock about 20 years ago to remove the scratches it received from my pursuit of birds and chipmunks as a kid. I have used it recently to shoot a woodchuck that was raiding my garden, since gunshots tend to scare my neighbors.
I STRONGLY recommend this air rifle as a precursor to actual powder charged bullets.
